Chapter 37 - THE FAMILY SECRET

My grandfather stepped out of the car.
For a moment, I couldn't move.
He was older.
Thinner.
But his eyes were the same.
“Emily.”
I ran toward him.
Then stopped.
Anger came rushing back.
“You don't get to disappear for fifteen years and come back like nothing happened.”
He nodded.
“I know.”
“Why?”
“Because if I returned, they would kill you.”
“Who?”
He looked at Julian.
Then Noah.
“Elliot.”
I stared.
“Your brother?”
“Yes.”
“Why does he want the trust?”
My grandfather looked at Noah.
“Because your son is the last legitimate heir.”
Julian stepped forward.
“Why didn't you tell us?”
“Because the trust contains more than money.”
“What else?”
“Evidence.”
“Evidence of what?”
My grandfather's face became grim.
“Illegal transactions. Bribes. Secret accounts. Names of people who bought influence.”
I stared.
“And my family?”
“Yes.”
“Julian's family?”
“Yes.”
Julian's jaw tightened.
“My parents knew?”
“Some of them.”
“Who?”
My grandfather didn't answer.
Instead, he looked at me.
“There's something else you need to know.”
“What?”
“Your wedding wasn't an accident.”
I froze.
“What do you mean?”
“The humiliation.”
Julian looked stunned.
“The way everyone turned against Emily.”
My grandfather nodded.
“They were trying to make her leave.”
“Why?”
“Because they needed her to surrender the trust.”
I looked at Julian.
May you like
“So the wedding…”
“Was a trap.”
