Chapter 68 - THE CEMETERY

The cemetery was empty.

Rain fell lightly.

Eleanor stood beside the grave.

She looked exhausted.

But she smiled when she saw me.

“You came.”

“Yes.”

“You brought the journal.”

I held it up.

“Tell me the truth.”

She laughed softly.

“You still believe truth is simple.”

“Start with Elena.”

Eleanor's expression changed.

“She was never your enemy.”

“I know.”

“She tried to leave.”

“I know.”

“She loved you.”

“I know.”

“Then why did you hunt her?”

“Because she knew too much.”

“About the trust?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

Eleanor looked at my father.

“About me.”

My father stepped forward.

“You were working for Robert Kane.”

Eleanor nodded.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because he had something I wanted.”

“What?”

“Power.”

My father shook his head.

“You destroyed your own family.”

“I built it.”

“No.”

He pointed toward me.

“She rebuilt it.”

Eleanor looked at me.

“You have Elena's strength.”

I said nothing.

She reached into her coat.

She pulled out a small envelope.

“Your mother left this for you.”

My heart stopped.

“You had it?”

“For thirty years.”

“Why?”

“Because I wanted to use it.”

“For what?”

“To control you.”

I stepped forward.

“What does it say?”

Eleanor handed it to me.

I opened it.

Elena's handwriting.

Emily,

If you're reading this, then Eleanor has finally lost control.

There is one truth left.

The person who betrayed me wasn't Eleanor.

I stopped breathing.

May you like

The next sentence continued.

It was someone I loved.
