Chapter 63 - THE WOMAN WHO SAVED ME

I couldn't stop crying.

My mother sat beside me.

“She loved you,” she whispered.

“Then why did she leave?”

“She didn't leave because she wanted to.”

My father answered.

“She left because she was being hunted.”

“By Eleanor?”

“Yes.”

“And you?”

“I was trying to protect both of you.”

“But you failed.”

He nodded.

“I did.”

I looked at the photograph again.

Elena was smiling.

She looked happy.

I touched her face.

“I don't remember her.”

“You were three days old.”

I laughed through tears.

Then my mother reached into her purse.

She took out a small pendant.

“I've kept this for you.”

I recognized it.

A tiny silver star.

“What is it?”

“Your mother gave it to you.”

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Elena.

And me.

A newborn.

On the back was a handwritten sentence.

For the day she asks who I was.

I couldn't breathe.

My mother continued.

“She knew one day you'd ask.”

“What did she want me to know?”

My mother turned the pendant over.

Another message was engraved inside.

You were never abandoned. You were hidden.

I closed my eyes.

For the first time in my life, I understood.

My mother hadn't lied because she didn't love me.

She had lied because Elena had trusted her with my life.

Then my father said:

“There is one more thing.”

I looked at him.

“Elena didn't disappear after leaving you.”

“Then where did she go?”

“She went to meet Eleanor.”

May you like

My blood ran cold.

“And she was never seen again.”
