Chapter 51 - ACCOUNT 909

I stared at the photograph for nearly a minute.

A bank vault.

A number.

909.

And my father's handwriting.

I have to finish what I started.

I called him.

Straight to voicemail.

Again.

Nothing.

My mother came downstairs.

“Where's Michael?”

I showed her the note.

Her face went pale.

“No.”

“What?”

“He promised me he would never go there.”

“Where?”

She looked at the photograph.

“The old Federal Bank.”

Julian came into the room.

“What happened?”

I handed him the photograph.

He immediately recognized the building.

“That bank closed fifteen years ago.”

“Then how do we get inside?”

My grandfather answered from behind us.

“You don't.”

We turned.

He was standing in the doorway.

“I know where Account 909 is.”

“Then take us there.”

He shook his head.

“Emily, your father didn't go there for money.”

“Then why?”

My grandfather looked at the photograph.

“Because Account 909 contains the reason he disappeared.”

I felt a chill.

“What reason?”

He lowered his voice.

“The name of the person who ordered your father's disappearance.”

Silence.

I looked at Julian.

“Eleanor?”

“No.”

My grandfather shook his head.

“Eleanor was only following instructions.”

My heart stopped.

“Whose?”

May you like

He looked toward the window.

“Mine.”
