Chapter 33 - the old king awakes

Noah drove out to the serene countryside farm where Michael and Emily had retired. He didn't want to burden them, but the stakes were too high. As he explained the cyber-attack to his parents in the warm, sunlit kitchen, Emily's face grew incredibly tense.

Michael sat at the oak table, his silver-streaked hair shining in the sunlight. The former mafia boss didn't look angry; he looked absolutely, terrifyingly calm. He slowly stood up, placing a reassuring hand on Noah's broad shoulder.

"Marco Falcone thinks he can fight a war from behind a screen," Michael said, his voice dropping into that familiar, lethal register that used to command empires. "But every ghost has a body. And every body has a location."

Michael walked over to a hidden floorboard beneath the staircase. He pulled out a dusty, encrypted satellite phone he hadn't touched in fifteen years. He dialed a number known only to the deepest, darkest brokers of the international underworld.
