Chapter 54 - The Fortress Outside TimeThe Clockless Citadel stood on a mountain surrounded by black clouds.
Its towers rose above a frozen waterfall.
Giant gears turned beneath the stone walls, though no visible machinery powered them.
At the main gate stood twelve statues.
Each depicted Ethan at a different age.
The youngest was twelve.
The oldest appeared nearly a hundred.
Mira counted them.
"Twelve versions."
Elara examined the inscriptions.
"One for every possible ending."
Ethan approached the final statue.
Its face had been destroyed.
Beneath it were the words:
THE ONE WHO CHOSE TO FORGET.
The gate opened before anyone touched it.
Inside stretched an enormous hall lined with mirrors.
Each mirror showed a different world.
In one, Ethan stood inside his school classroom.
In another, he wore a crown.
In a third, he lay beneath a hospital blanket while his mother held his hand.
Ethan stopped before that image.
His mother was crying.
A doctor spoke quietly beside her.
"We've done everything we can."
Ethan touched the mirror.
The scene changed.
He saw himself lying unconscious in a hospital bed.
Machines surrounded him.
His father stood at the window.
Alive.
"Dad!"
The man turned.
For a moment, their eyes met.
Then the mirror darkened.
A voice spoke from the far end of the hall.
"You're finally here."
Daniel Cole stepped out of the shadows.
He looked older than Ethan remembered.
But he was real.
Ethan ran toward him.
His father dropped to his knees.
They embraced.
Neither spoke.
For a long moment, the dangers of the kingdom seemed far away.
Then Daniel pulled back.
"How much do you remember?"
"Not enough."
Daniel's face tightened.
"Then we have very little time."
He led them into a chamber filled with countless glowing hourglasses.
Each contained a different world.
Daniel pointed to one.
Inside, Asterwyn burned.
Another showed modern cities collapsing.
A third displayed an empty Earth.
"The fracture is spreading through every possible future," Daniel explained.
Ethan stared at the hourglasses.
"Can we stop it?"
"Yes."
"How?"
Daniel looked toward Mira.
Then Elara.
Then Rowan.
