Chapter 33 - The Father in Another CenturyEthan could barely understand what he had heard.

"My father?"
Queen Eleanor nodded.
"The child we sent away grew up in your world."
Ethan remembered the man who had taught him to ride a bicycle.
The man who worked late shifts.
The man who always told him strange bedtime stories about castles and kings.
His father.
Daniel Cole.
Ethan's breath caught.
"Dad came from here?"
"Yes."
"Then why do I have the same face as the prince?"
Eleanor looked at Rowan.
"Because the same royal features have appeared throughout our bloodline."
Rowan stepped forward.
"Your father was the rightful heir. And when he was sent away, the throne passed to someone who should never have worn the crown."
King Aldric looked down.
Ethan stared at him.
"You're not my grandfather?"
The king struggled to answer.
"I raised the child who remained. I believed he was my son."
Rowan's expression hardened.
"But you never asked why the queen feared him."
Aldric turned.
"What are you saying?"
Eleanor looked toward the castle.
"There was never supposed to be a second child."
The wind grew cold.
"Someone came through the mirror before your son was born. Someone who could take the shape of any heir."
The king's hand tightened around his sword.
"And we raised him?"
Eleanor nodded.
"Until he grew old enough to take the throne."
Ethan's mind raced.
"Where is he now?"
Rowan gave a grim smile.
"That's the most frightening part."
He looked directly at Aldric.
"He's been standing in front of us the entire time."
The king's shadow moved.
But Aldric himself did not.
May you like
The shadow slowly turned its head toward Ethan.
And smiled.
