Chapter 36 - The Kingdom Between SecondsThe photograph changed everything.

Ethan examined the image again.

His father appeared younger.

The king wore modern clothing.

Queen Eleanor stood in front of a familiar suburban house.

"That's my house," Ethan whispered.

Aldric nodded.

"We lived there."

Rowan shook his head.

"That's impossible."

The king looked exhausted.

"For years, I believed I was born into this kingdom. But the memories are returning."

Eleanor closed her eyes.

"The doorway doesn't merely transport people."

She looked toward the shattered chapel window.

"It creates worlds from abandoned moments in time."

Ethan struggled to understand.

"What does that mean?"

"Imagine a single moment when everything could have happened differently," she explained. "One life becomes many possible lives."

"And this kingdom?"

"One of those possibilities."

The walls began trembling.

Outside, the capital flickered.

A tower vanished and reappeared.

A street became a forest for a heartbeat before returning to stone.

Rowan looked terrified.

"The kingdom is collapsing."

Eleanor nodded.

"The first king has awakened."

Ethan remembered the ancient ruler in the vision.

His own face.

His golden eyes.

His warning.

You did this.

The boy suddenly understood why every portrait in the underground chamber resembled him.

The children were not strangers chosen by magic.

They belonged to different possible versions of a single bloodline, drawn across centuries.

Each had been brought here to repair the original fracture.

"But why me?" Ethan asked.

The answer came from the doorway.

"Because you're the only one who hasn't made the mistake yet."

The first king stood in the chapel.

He no longer looked like a ghost.

He looked alive.

He approached Ethan slowly.

"My name was never written in your history," he said.

"But you know me."

Ethan stepped backward.

"Who are you?"

May you like

The man lowered his crown.

"Your future."
