Chapter 49 - The Memory That Was StolenEthan woke inside a memory.

He stood in a laboratory filled with strange machines.
White lights shone above polished floors.
Beyond a glass wall, he could see a city unlike anything in the medieval kingdom.
Tall buildings.
Flying vehicles.
A sky streaked with silver lines.
He looked down.
His hands were no longer those of a twelve-year-old.
He was an adult.
A man of perhaps thirty.
Across the laboratory, Daniel Cole stood beside a massive circular machine.
"Dad?"
Daniel turned.
But his expression carried no recognition.
"Professor Cole," he said, "the temporal engine is ready."
Ethan realized he was seeing the world through someone else's eyes.
Or perhaps his own eyes from a future he had never lived.
A woman entered the laboratory.
She wore a dark-blue uniform and carried a tablet.
"We have a problem," she said.
"The medieval simulation has developed independent consciousness."
Daniel stared at the screen.
"That's impossible."
"Thirty thousand simulated people are showing patterns of genuine memory and emotional development."
Ethan's borrowed voice answered.
"Then they're alive."
The woman shook her head.
"They're computational constructs."
"Then explain why they're afraid to die."
The scene shifted.
Ethan stood before a massive control panel.
On the screen appeared a kingdom.
Asterwyn.
Its castle.
Its mountains.
Its villages.
Every familiar detail.
Asterwyn had begun as an experiment.
A simulated reconstruction of medieval history.
But something had gone wrong.
The simulation had become real enough to affect the outside world.
Daniel explained that a failed temporal experiment had connected the simulated kingdom to physical reality.
Time itself had split.
Asterwyn was no longer merely a program.
It had become a world.
The memory changed again.
A younger Ethan stood beside the machine.
Daniel placed a hand on his shoulder.
"If the fracture spreads, both worlds will collapse."
"What do we do?"
"We send someone inside."
"Who?"
Daniel hesitated.
The older Ethan stepped forward.
"Me."
The scene froze.
A voice whispered behind him.
"Now you understand."
Ethan turned.
Malachar stood in the laboratory.
"You're not dreaming," the dark king said. "You're remembering."
Ethan looked at the frozen figures.
"This happened?"
"Once."
"Then why am I twelve?"
Malachar approached.
"Because you made the ultimate sacrifice."
Ethan's breath caught.
"What sacrifice?"
Malachar held up a small silver sphere.
Inside it floated a human memory.
"You erased your entire life."
The sphere broke.
A final image appeared.
Ethan, now an adult, strapped himself into the machine.
Daniel begged him to stop.
But Ethan only smiled.
"If I become a child again, I can enter the kingdom before the fracture reaches its end."
The machine activated.
And the adult Ethan vanished.
The memory dissolved.
Malachar leaned close.
"But the world created someone else to take your place."
Ethan whispered, "The replacement."
May you like
Malachar nodded.
"And he's coming."
