Chapter 16 - The Kingdom Beneath the KingdomNoah studied the silver coin.

The engraved crown was not pointing toward the throne.
It was pointing downward.
He turned the coin over and noticed a tiny compass needle hidden inside its design.
A mechanism clicked beneath the pedestal.
The floor began separating.
Everyone staggered backward as a circular staircase rose from the darkness.
Below it, an enormous underground city stretched beneath the castle.
Silent towers surrounded a black lake.
At its center stood another palace.
Older than the kingdom above.
Thomas lowered his voice.
"This is where the first kings lived."
Mira stared at the impossible city.
"Why did they abandon it?"
"They didn't," Thomas answered.
"They were locked inside."
From the deepest tower came the sound of a bell.
Noah counted its strikes.
One.
Two.

Three.
Then the entire city began lighting up.
