Chapter 61

The transmission from the Russian naval yard did not set off alarms in the Pentagon. It did not trigger the failsafes Sarah had meticulously woven into their decentralized servers in Montana. Protocol Leviathan operated entirely in the analog blind spots, utilizing legacy Soviet submarine cables buried at the bottom of the ocean—infrastructure the modern digital world had long forgotten.
Six months after the supposed end of the war, the harsh Montana winter had firmly gripped the ranch. Cole sat in his pickup truck at the edge of town, the heater blasting, waiting for Ava to emerge from the local hardware store. He was watching the snow fall, a sense of hard-won contentment settling over him.
His encrypted burner phone, tucked into the glove compartment and unused for a year, vibrated with a sharp, aggressive trill.
Cole stared at the dashboard. The apex predator, buried beneath layers of domestic peace, violently ripped itself awake.
He opened the compartment and pulled the phone out. The screen displayed a scrambled sequence of alphanumeric characters, slowly decrypting into a single line of text:
Ghost-Actual. The Deep is awake. We have a breach in Chicago.
It was a message from Vincent Castalano.
"Damn it," Cole whispered, his blood turning to absolute ice.
Ava opened the passenger door, a blast of freezing wind accompanying her as she climbed in, shaking snow from her coat. She saw the look in his eyes immediately. The relaxed rancher was gone; the operator of Task Force 9 had returned.
"Cole? What is it?" Ava asked, her voice tight with sudden, suffocating panic.
"Vincent," Cole replied, showing her the screen. "Something is happening in Chicago."
"We aren't going back," Ava pleaded, grabbing his arm. "Cole, you promised! You said the Vanguard was dismantled. You said we were safe!"
"We are safe, Ava," Cole said softly, his jaw setting into a hard, unyielding line. "But Vincent saved my life at Raven Rock. He saved Donovan. He pulled us out of the fire when he had no obligation to do so. If he’s calling in the marker, I have to answer."
"What does 'The Deep is awake' mean?" Ava asked, staring at the message.
"I don't know," Cole admitted, shifting the truck into drive. "But we are going back to the ranch. I need Sarah on the terminal."
They tore back to the isolated property. Cole burst into the guest house, where Sarah was monitoring the legitimate financial networks.
"Sarah, I need a secure line to Chicago," Cole commanded, bypassing greetings. "Protocol Leviathan. See if it pings anything in your archived Vanguard data."
Sarah’s fingers flew across her keyboard, opening the encrypted tunnel to Vincent’s servers. "Routing now. Cole... the chatter on the dark web just spiked massively in the last hour. Someone is coordinating a massive, kinetic mobilization on the Eastern Seaboard."
The line to Chicago connected with a hiss of static.
"Vincent," Cole spoke into the microphone. "I received the message."
"They didn't come for the money, Cole," Vincent’s deep, rumbling baritone echoed through the speakers, laced with a cold, terrifying fury. "They hit the pediatric hospital. They hit the charitable foundation."
Cole frowned, exchanging a bewildered look with Sarah. "Why would a syndicate hit legitimate charities? There is no tactical advantage."
"They aren't a syndicate," Vincent growled. "They are an extermination squad. They didn't steal anything. They just burned the buildings to the ground and executed my security personnel. And they left a message on the server."

"What message?"
"They said the old world failed because it relied on satellites and data," Vincent explained. "They said the new world will be built on fear. Protocol Leviathan is active, Cole. They are hunting the architects of the Vanguard's destruction. They are coming for us."
