Chapter 41

The digital screen cast a sickly, pale illumination across the dark concrete walls of the basement. Cole Bennett stared at the encrypted message, his thumb hovering over the delete key. The peaceful illusion of the Montana ranch dissolved in a fraction of a second, replaced by the suffocating, familiar chill of an impending war. We know what the child's blood carries. We have found the ranch.

"Cole?" Sarah’s voice echoed softly from the top of the wooden stairs. "Are you coming back up? Ava is putting Nora to bed."

Cole closed the heavy steel lid of the safe, locking it with a sharp spin of the dial. He took a slow, deep breath, burying the apex predator back beneath the calm exterior of a protective uncle.

"I'll be right there," Cole called out, his voice a steady, flawless baritone.

He walked up the stairs, entering the warm, brightly lit kitchen. Sarah was wiping down the counters, while Master Sergeant Donovan sat at the table, nursing a cup of decaf coffee. Cole didn't smile. He walked directly to the tactical bag sitting near the pantry, unzipping it with a harsh, metallic rip.

Donovan’s posture shifted instantly. Her seasoned eyes locked onto Cole. "What is it?"

"The perimeter is compromised," Cole stated, pulling three suppressed 9mm pistols from the bag and sliding one across the table to Donovan. "They found us."

Sarah froze, the dish towel slipping from her hands. "That's impossible, Cole. I scrubbed our digital footprint. I bounced the proxy servers through ten different countries. We are ghosts."

"Ghosts leave shadows, Sarah," Cole replied coldly, handing her a weapon. "And someone with enough capital just bought a very expensive flashlight. We don't have time to analyze the breach. We need to secure Ava and Nora."

"Who is it?" Donovan asked, checking the chamber of her pistol with a practiced flick of her wrist. "Vanguard remnants?"

"No. A new player," Cole said, moving to the window and peering through the edge of the blinds into the dark, sweeping valley. "They mentioned an Omega Vault. They want Nora's bloodline."

Before Sarah could ask another question, a sudden, frantic neighing echoed from the stables outside. The palomino horse Nora loved so much was thrashing wildly against its stall.

"They're inside the wire," Cole whispered, his eyes narrowing as he spotted a faint, unnatural shimmer in the tree line—the distortion of active optical camouflage.

"Get to the hallway," Cole commanded, his voice dropping to a lethal whisper. "Donovan, hold the rear access door. Sarah, get Ava and Nora into the reinforced storm cellar beneath the guest house. Move."

The heavy silence of the ranch was violently shattered by the sound of shattering glass. Three tear-gas canisters crashed through the living room windows, instantly filling the house with thick, burning white smoke.

"Contact!" Donovan roared, raising her weapon as the front door was kicked off its hinges.
