Chapter 46

The sonic grenade emitted a crippling, disorienting wave of agony that rendered the entire ghost team completely incapacitated. Cole fought desperately against the paralysis, his vision swimming, his muscles locking in agonizing spasms. He could see Donovan collapsed in the snow, clutching her bleeding ears, and Sarah writhing helplessly nearby.
"Ava," Cole choked out, trying to force his hand toward his fallen weapon.
Ava Bennett was not a soldier. She had spent years running from the violence that consumed her first husband, and she had sought sanctuary in the arms of another warrior. But as the Warden approached her daughter, the terrified widow vanished, replaced by a ferocious, unyielding mother.
Ava stood up, shaking off the sonic interference with sheer, maternal adrenaline. She grabbed the heavy 9mm pistol Sarah had dropped in the snow and raised it with both trembling hands.
"Get away from her!" Ava screamed, her voice cracking with raw terror.
The Warden stopped a few feet away. He looked entirely unbothered by the weapon pointed at his chest. His face was sharp, aristocratic, and lined with age.
"Mrs. Bennett," the Warden said smoothly, his voice carrying easily over the dying whine of the sonic grenade. "You are incredibly brave. But you are fighting a current you cannot swim against. Your husband stole something that belongs to the future of this planet."
"He was a good man!" Ava sobbed, her finger tightening on the trigger. "He wanted to destroy it!"
"He was a thief," the Warden corrected coldly. "And he left you to bear the consequences."
The Warden didn't raise a weapon. He simply nodded his head.
From the shadows behind Ava, a surviving operative lunged forward, swinging the heavy butt of an assault rifle directly into the back of Ava’s head.
Ava collapsed instantly into the snow, the pistol falling from her limp fingers.
"Mommy!" Nora shrieked, scrambling toward her fallen mother.
The Warden stepped forward, reaching down and grabbing the little girl effortlessly by the arm. He hoisted her up, tucking her screaming, thrashing form under his arm like a piece of luggage.
"No!" Cole roared, the sound tearing from his throat in a guttural, demonic howl of absolute despair.
He forced his body to move, crawling through the snow with agonizing slowness, his bloodshot eyes locked onto the man stealing his niece.
"You fought well, Ghost," the Warden remarked, looking down at Cole with a mixture of pity and respect. "But the old world is dead. And I have the key to the new one."
The Warden turned and walked calmly toward the tree line, flanked by his remaining operatives.
Cole finally managed to grip the handle of his pistol. He raised it with a trembling hand, but his vision was too blurred, the target obscured by the swirling snow and retreating shadows.

A deafening, mechanical roar echoed from the northern ridge as a massive, black stealth VTOL aircraft lifted off the ground, its thrusters burning bright blue against the night sky.
Cole watched helplessly as the aircraft banked sharply and disappeared into the clouds, taking the only light in his world with it.
