Chapter 17

The interior of the Horizon Data Center was a labyrinth of humming, monolithic black servers bathed in the cold, blue light of LED indicators. Cole moved with silent, predatory grace, his suppressed weapon leading the way, clearing the intersections with terrifying efficiency. Sarah followed closely, her heart hammering a frantic rhythm against her ribs.

"Sublevel access is fifty yards ahead," Sarah whispered, consulting her wrist-mounted tactical screen.

They reached the heavy, reinforced blast doors leading to the subterranean levels. As predicted, the doors were standing wide open to facilitate the cooling purge.

They descended the concrete stairwell, the air growing noticeably colder.

As they reached the bottom landing, Cole held up a closed fist, signaling Sarah to halt.

He peered around the corner. A long, brightly lit corridor stretched out before them, terminating at a massive, circular steel door—the entrance to the Vanguard’s private server vault. Standing guard in front of the door were four heavily armored mercenaries wearing distinctive, unmarked black tactical gear.

"Praetorian Guard," Cole mouthed silently, recognizing the elite, disavowed operators.

"We have two minutes left before the doors lock down," Sarah warned softly, her eyes wide with panic.

Cole didn't hesitate. He didn't rely on stealth; he relied on overwhelming, catastrophic speed.

He stepped out from the stairwell, raising his MP7, and fired three rapid, flawless bursts. Pfft. Pfft. Pfft.

The suppressed gunfire echoed like muted claps in the sterile corridor. The lethal precision of Task Force 9 was undeniable. The first two mercenaries dropped instantly, their visors shattered by armor-piercing rounds.

The remaining two guards reacted with terrifying speed, diving behind the thick concrete pillars flanking the blast doors, raising their weapons to return fire. The silence of the bunker was shattered as unsuppressed automatic gunfire roared down the hallway.

"Suppressing fire!" Cole roared, laying down a heavy barrage that chipped the concrete pillars, forcing the mercenaries to keep their heads down. "Sarah! The terminal box on the right wall! Splice the door controls!"

Sarah sprinted down the corridor, diving into a slide as a hail of bullets tore through the air where she had just been standing. She crashed against the wall, seeking cover behind a recessed electrical junction box.

"I'm at the box!" Sarah yelled over the deafening roar of the firefight. She ripped the metal cover off, exposing a chaotic nest of fiber-optic cables. She jammed her decryption spike into the primary data port.

"They are trying to manually override the lockdown from inside the vault!" Sarah shouted, her fingers flying across the keyboard of her tablet. "I need thirty seconds to block the command!"

"You have ten!" Cole commanded, popping out from behind the stairwell wall and firing a precise burst. One of the mercenaries exposed his shoulder, and Cole’s round tore through the joint. The man screamed, dropping his weapon.

Cole didn't waste the opening. He stepped fully into the corridor, firing a single, lethal shot that permanently neutralized the wounded guard.

"One hostile left!" Cole called out, reloading his weapon smoothly.

The final mercenary, realizing his squad was dead and his position compromised, did something entirely unexpected. He didn't return fire. He slammed his fist against a red emergency panel on the wall next to the blast doors.

A loud, piercing klaxon alarm began to shriek through the subterranean bunker.

"He triggered the manual lockdown!" Cole roared, surging forward with terrifying, explosive speed.

He sprinted down the corridor, completely ignoring the risk of return fire. The mercenary raised his weapon, but Cole was a blur of motion. He didn't shoot; he closed the distance and launched a devastating flying knee strike directly into the mercenary's chest plate.

The impact knocked the breath from the guard’s lungs, sending him crashing backward against the thick steel. Cole drew his combat knife in mid-air, driving the ceramic blade cleanly through the gap in the guard's collar armor. The man went limp instantly.

"I got it!" Sarah screamed, slamming the enter key.

She executed a localized malware payload that froze the hydraulic locking mechanism just as the massive blast doors began to slide shut. The doors stopped with a two-foot gap remaining.

Cole grabbed the edges of the heavy steel and squeezed his broad frame through the gap, stepping into the absolute heart of the Vanguard’s global empire.
