Chapter 28

The following months at the Montana ranch were a masterclass in healing. The sprawling, isolated property provided the perfect sanctuary from the paranoia and violence that had consumed their lives.

Cole spent his days working the land, repairing fences, and teaching Nora how to ride a gentle palomino horse. He no longer wore tactical gear; his uniform consisted of faded denim and worn leather work boots. The dark, terrifying operator had retreated, allowing the quiet, protective uncle to finally take the lead.

Sarah transformed the ranch's guest house into a highly secure, decentralized logistics hub. She utilized her unparalleled skills to manage their finances, ensuring they remained entirely invisible to the global banking grid.

Master Sergeant Donovan, having fully recovered from her wounds, acted as the ranch’s unyielding security chief. She patrolled the perimeter with a vigilant, protective eye, though her interactions with Cole were far less militaristic and far more familial.

It was a warm, late-summer evening. The family was gathered around a large fire pit in the backyard, roasting marshmallows under a canopy of brilliant, unpolluted stars.

Nora was sitting on Cole’s lap, happily covered in sticky marshmallow goo, animatedly explaining the plot of a cartoon she had watched earlier.

Ava sat beside them, a soft, contented smile on her face. She leaned her head against Cole’s broad shoulder, finding absolute safety in his presence.

"You know," Ava murmured, her voice barely audible over the crackling fire. "Ethan always talked about buying a ranch in Montana when his enlistment was up. He wanted wide open spaces. No sirens. No concrete."

Cole looked into the fire, a profound, lingering sadness touching his eyes. "He would have loved this place."

"He would have loved that you kept us safe," Ava corrected gently, resting her hand over his. "You gave us the life he wanted for us, Cole. You kept your promise."

Cole didn't speak. He simply squeezed her hand, accepting the absolution she offered.

"Incoming," Donovan announced, walking over from the main house with a satellite phone in her hand. Her posture was relaxed, but her eyes held a subtle, curious intensity. "Sarah says the encrypted relay just caught a priority transmission."

Cole’s internal alarm flared instantly, but he suppressed it for Nora’s sake. He gently set the little girl down. "Go help Aunt Sarah with the graham crackers, little boss."

Nora bounded away toward the guest house.

Cole stood up, taking the phone from Donovan. "Who is it?"

"It's an unlisted frequency," Donovan replied, crossing her arms. "But the encryption signature is highly sophisticated. Government level."

Cole answered the phone, stepping away from the fire. "Speak."

"Lieutenant Bennett," a calm, authoritative voice echoed through the speaker. It was a woman’s voice, sharp and entirely devoid of hesitation. "My name is Director Vance. I believe you knew my father."

Cole’s blood turned to absolute ice. General Vance’s daughter.

"Your father died a hero," Cole stated coldly. "And I am retired."

"My father died protecting a fragile peace, Lieutenant," Director Vance corrected smoothly. "But peace is an illusion that requires constant maintenance. The Vanguard and Lazarus are destroyed, yes. But their collapse created a massive power vacuum in the global intelligence community. Rogue factions are scrambling to claim the discarded assets."

"That sounds like a government problem, Director. I am a civilian," Cole replied, his voice a low, vibrating hum of warning.

"You are a ghost, Cole," Vance said. "And I need a ghost. We have actionable intelligence indicating that a highly organized cartel has secured a cache of localized EMP devices from a breached armory in Eastern Europe. They intend to auction them to the highest bidder next week in Dubai."

"Send a SEAL team," Cole suggested flatly.

"I can't," Vance admitted, her voice tightening with frustration. "The cartel has moles inside JSOC. Any official deployment will be flagged, and the devices will vanish before we even clear airspace. I need an operator who exists entirely off the board. I need Task Force 9."
