Chapter 40

Six months later.

The sprawling Montana ranch was bathed in the warm, golden light of late summer. The traumatic shadows of Dubai, the Vanguard, and the Russian syndicates felt like a distant, impossible nightmare.

Cole stood near the wooden corral, leaning against the fence, watching Nora brush the coat of a gentle palomino horse. He wore a simple, faded denim shirt and a worn cowboy hat, looking entirely at peace. The lethal, cold operator was gone, replaced by a quiet, protective father figure who commanded the land rather than a battlefield.

Sarah and Donovan sat on the porch of the main house, drinking iced tea and laughing at a joke, their camaraderie forged in the fires of survival.

Ava walked out from the kitchen, carrying a pitcher of lemonade. She looked radiant, her eyes bright and unburdened by the fear that had haunted her for four years. She walked over to Cole, handing him a glass and leaning back against his strong chest.

"She is getting really good with the horses," Ava smiled, watching her daughter.

"She is fearless," Cole agreed, wrapping his arm securely around Ava’s waist, kissing the top of her head. "She gets that from her mother."

"She gets her stubbornness from you," Ava teased softly, turning in his arms to look up into his pale gray eyes.

"I am highly motivated," Cole chuckled, pulling her closer for a warm, lingering kiss.

As they stood together, basking in the perfect, hard-won tranquility of their sanctuary, Cole felt a profound, overwhelming sense of gratitude. He had fought through hell, confronted ghosts and monsters, and emerged victorious. He had secured a life for the people he loved, far away from the blood and concrete of his past.

But as the sun began to set, casting long, peaceful shadows across the valley, the heavy, encrypted satellite phone locked in a steel safe in the basement of the guest house—a phone that was supposed to remain silent forever—suddenly blinked to life.

It didn't ring. It didn't emit a sound.

The screen illuminated in the dark, displaying a single, chilling, unencrypted text message from an unknown sender.
