Chapter 14

Jake spun around, his body instantly shielding Ava and Nora. He raised his carbine, his eyes sweeping the dust-filled darkness of the ruined diner.

"Impressive tactical improvisation, Lieutenant," a voice coughed from the rubble.

It wasn't Miller. It was the imposter who had worn Ethan's face.

The man emerged from the shadows of the kitchen, covered in plaster dust, limping heavily. He held a suppressed assault rifle, the laser sight cutting a bright red line through the smoke, painting a deadly target directly on Jake’s chest.

"How did you get out of the zip-ties?" Jake demanded, his voice a low, vibrating hum, keeping himself perfectly positioned between the killer and his family.

"You underestimate the Vanguard's training protocols," the imposter smirked, spitting a mouthful of blood onto the linoleum. "Dislocating a thumb to slip a restraint is basic escape and evasion. You brought the roof down on Miller, but you just did my job for me. The incompetent bureaucrat is dead, and I get to recover the microdot."

"You aren't walking out of here," Jake promised coldly.

"Neither are you," the imposter countered, his finger tightening on the trigger. "Toss the dog tag over, Jake. I’ll make it quick for the widow and the child."

"Don't do it, Jake," Ava whispered fiercely behind him, clutching Nora tight. "He'll kill us anyway."

Jake knew she was right. The imposter was a cleaner. He left no loose ends.

Jake didn't lower his weapon. He didn't reach for the dog tag. He stared down the barrel of the assassin's rifle, calculating the fatal geometry of the standoff. He was faster, but the imposter was armored. A chest shot wouldn't stop him before he pulled the trigger.

Jake needed a distraction.

"Nora," Jake said softly, not breaking eye contact with the killer. "Remember the magic trick I showed you in the hospital?"

Nora, terrified but trusting the man who had just pulled them from the rubble, nodded against her mother's shoulder.

"Do it now, sweetheart," Jake commanded gently.

Nora reached down and pressed the glowing, brightly colored button on her light-up sneakers.

The sudden, erratic flashing of bright LED lights in the dark, dusty corner drew the imposter's highly trained, threat-seeking eyes for a microscopic fraction of a second.

It was all Jake needed.

He didn't fire at the man's chest. He dropped his aim and fired two rapid, suppressed rounds directly into the imposter’s knees.

The assassin shrieked in agony, his legs buckling instantly beneath him. The assault rifle discharged wildly into the ceiling as he collapsed to the floor.

Jake closed the distance with terrifying, explosive speed. Before the imposter could recover his weapon, Jake kicked the rifle across the room, planting his heavy combat boot firmly on the man's shattered right knee.

The imposter screamed, thrashing in the dust.

"Who sent you?" Jake demanded, pressing the hot barrel of his carbine against the man’s forehead. "Give me the name of the Architect, or I put a bullet in your skull right now."

"You... you can't stop them," the imposter gasped, laughing through bloody teeth. "The Vanguard is everywhere. The network is already active. The microdot is just a backup!"

"Give me a name!" Jake roared, applying agonizing pressure to the shattered joint.

"His name... is Sterling," the imposter choked out, tears of pain streaming down his face. "Admiral Sterling. He commands the Pacific Fleet intelligence apparatus. He funded the Kunar ambush."

Jake’s blood ran cold. The corruption wasn't just in the logistics command; it reached the absolute highest echelons of the Pentagon.

Before Jake could interrogate the man further, the wail of distant police sirens pierced the night, growing rapidly louder. The collapse of the diner had triggered municipal alarms.

"We have to move," Ava urged, pulling Nora into her arms.

Jake looked down at the bleeding assassin. He didn't pull the trigger. He wasn't an executioner.

"Let the feds find you," Jake whispered, stepping off the man's knee. "Tell Sterling that the ghost is coming for him."
