Chapter 43

The reinforced storm cellar beneath the guest house was dark, damp, and freezing. Sarah activated the emergency LED lights, casting a pale glow over the concrete walls. Ava sat on the floor in the corner, rocking a weeping Nora back and forth, her own face pale with absolute terror.
"Cole, who are these people?" Ava asked, her voice shaking violently. "You said we were safe. You promised me we were safe."
"I was wrong," Cole admitted, the words tasting like ash in his mouth. He knelt in front of them, his dark eyes locking onto Ava's. "I won't let them take her, Ava. I swear it on my life."
Above them, the heavy, muffled thuds of combat boots echoed on the wooden floorboards of the guest house.
"They breached the upper level," Donovan whispered, pointing her weapon at the heavy steel trapdoor above their heads. "They’re going to find this hatch in under a minute."
Suddenly, a voice crackled through the cellar's internal intercom system. Sarah had wired it for emergencies, but the intruders had clearly tapped into the localized frequency.
"Cole Bennett," a smooth, chillingly calm voice echoed from the speaker. "My name is Warden. I represent the architects of the Omega Vault. You are fighting a war you cannot possibly comprehend."
"I comprehend that you are standing in my house," Cole replied, pressing the intercom button, his voice a low, vibrating threat. "And you are not leaving alive."
"I admire your tenacity, Ghost," the Warden chuckled softly. "But we do not want your life. We simply require the biological key locked inside the child's genetic code. Ethan Vance stole something from us a long time ago, and he hid the decryption sequence in her DNA. Surrender the girl, and the rest of you may walk away."
Ava gasped, clutching Nora tighter. "No!"
"You touch her, and I will tear your soul apart," Cole promised into the microphone.
"A predictable response," the Warden sighed. "Breach the floor."
The intercom clicked dead.
Seconds later, the screech of thermal cutting lances echoed from above. Sparks began to shower down from the edges of the heavy steel trapdoor as the operatives systematically melted the locking mechanisms.
"They're burning through," Sarah panicked, raising her pistol.
"We can't hold them in this choke point," Cole realized, his tactical mind spinning rapidly. "If they drop flashbangs down that hole, we are completely paralyzed."
"There's a secondary smuggling tunnel behind the storage racks," Donovan pointed out, moving toward the back of the cellar. "It leads out to the old creek bed. We can flank them."
"Sarah, take Ava and Nora down the tunnel," Cole ordered, grabbing a heavy tactical shotgun from a wall locker. "Donovan and I will hold this room and draw their fire. Once you are clear, wait for me at the creek."

"Cole, I'm not leaving you," Sarah argued, her eyes fierce.
"You have to protect the bloodline, Sarah," Cole said softly, looking at his sister. "Go."
