Chapter 19

The air in the server vault was freezing, but Cole felt a burning, volcanic rage radiating through his veins. He held Nora gently in his left arm, her small face buried in his tactical vest, shielding her eyes from the man on the catwalk.
"Sarah," Cole commanded softly, his right hand gripping his suppressed MP7, keeping it leveled at Sterling. "Initialize the biometric scanner on the terminal."
Sarah’s hands shook as she typed the command. A small, illuminated glass panel slid open on the console, casting a faint green glow. "It's ready, Cole."
Sterling watched from above, a smug, victorious smile stretching across his face. "A wise decision, Lieutenant. Once the system verifies her genetic profile, the Vanguard network will automatically update its security protocols, permanently locking out any external interference. You are handing me the keys to the kingdom."
"I'm handing you an eviction notice," Cole whispered.
He gently lifted Nora's small hand, pressing her tiny thumb against the glowing green glass of the biometric scanner.
The console chimed. The screen flashed brilliantly, reading: FAMILIAL OVERRIDE ACCEPTED. AWAITING DECRYPTION CIPHER.
"The cipher, Sarah!" Cole yelled.
Sarah didn't hesitate. She typed the nursery rhyme Ethan had left behind, the agonizing, beautiful code that had kept them alive for four years.
Four bells. Three gulls. Seven fathoms. Nine nails.
She hit Enter.
The massive digital monitors surrounding the vault didn't lock down. They flashed violently red. A loud, piercing siren began to wail through the subterranean chamber.
"What is happening?!" Sterling shrieked, leaning over the railing, his arrogant composure completely shattered. "The system is initiating a purge sequence!"
"Ethan didn't build a backdoor to give you control, Admiral," Cole shouted over the blaring alarms, a fierce, triumphant grin breaking across his face. "He built a dead-man's switch! If the cipher was entered using his bloodline, it triggers an irreversible, localized wipe of every server in this room, followed by a mass, unencrypted data dump to every major news outlet on the planet!"
"No!" Sterling roared, raising his pistol, aiming frantically at the terminal.
Cole didn't wait for the Admiral to fire. He moved with explosive, terrifying speed, shoving Sarah and Nora behind the heavy steel casing of the central mainframe, and returned fire.
His suppressed weapon barked, laying down a devastating hail of suppressive fire that forced Sterling to dive for cover on the catwalk. Bullets sparked and ricocheted off the metal grating, shattering the expensive lighting fixtures.
"The download is executing!" Sarah yelled, monitoring the progress bar on her tablet. "Sixty percent! We have to hold him off for thirty seconds!"
"Kill them!" Sterling screamed into his radio. "Breach the vault! Kill them all!"
The heavy steel blast doors groaned as heavy breaching charges detonated on the other side. The Vanguard mercenaries were forcing their way in.
"We are trapped!" Sarah cried out.
"We aren't trapped," Cole said, his gray eyes turning to cold, absolute obsidian. He pulled his last two high-yield incendiary grenades from his vest. "We are just finishing the job."
He didn't throw the grenades at the blast doors. He threw them directly into the primary cooling vents of the massive server racks surrounding them.
"Cover your ears!" Cole roared, pulling Sarah and Nora tight against his chest.
The grenades detonated with a blinding, white-hot flash. The localized explosions didn't destroy the room, but they instantly ignited the highly flammable coolant fluid pumping through the servers. The vault erupted into a spectacular, roaring inferno of electrical fires and melting plastic.
The intense heat triggered the facility's emergency halon gas suppression system, flooding the room with thick, white, oxygen-depriving vapor.
The blast doors finally gave way, crashing inward, but the advancing mercenaries were met with a wall of toxic smoke and blinding fire.
"Upload complete!" Sarah screamed over the chaos. "The registry is public!"
"Move!" Cole commanded, hauling them both to their feet.
They didn't head for the main exit. Cole guided them toward a concealed emergency maintenance hatch hidden behind the burning servers—a route he had memorized from the blueprints. He kicked the heavy grate open, shoving Sarah and Nora into the dark, narrow ventilation shaft.

As Cole turned to follow them, a shadow dropped from the smoke-filled catwalk above.
Admiral Sterling landed on the concrete floor, his dress uniform scorched, wielding a heavy combat knife. He lunged at Cole with the desperate, manic fury of a man who had just watched his empire turn to ash.
