Chapter 55

Cole stared into Vincent's eyes, realizing the mafia don was entirely correct. They weren't dealing with a simple weapon; they were dealing with a global hostage situation.

Cole slowly pulled his hand back. "How do we defuse it?"

"We have to manually insert the key into the primary uplink terminal," Clara’s voice echoed through the intercom. Vincent’s brilliant wife was operating the cyber-defenses from the Chicago estate. "Once the system registers the correct biological sequence, it will prompt an administrator override. If we input a specific sequence of corrupt code during that window, we can trigger a cascading system failure that permanently bricks the satellites in orbit. The network dies, and no power grids are targeted."

"Where is the primary uplink?" Cole asked.

"That's the problem," Clara sighed, the sound of frantic typing filtering through the speakers. "The Vanguard built the network, but the government launched the satellites. The uplink isn't hidden in a snowy mountain or a deserted island. It's located deep inside the most secure, heavily fortified military installation in the United States."

"The Pentagon," Donovan groaned, rubbing her temples.

"Worse," Vincent said, a dark smile touching his lips. "Site R. The Raven Rock Mountain Complex in Pennsylvania."

Cole’s blood ran cold. Raven Rock was the alternate command center for the Pentagon, designed to house the President and military leaders in the event of a nuclear war. It was a subterranean fortress buried under a mountain of greenstone, guarded by elite military police, biometric scanners, and anti-aircraft batteries.

"It's a suicide mission," Cole stated bluntly. "A full infantry battalion couldn't breach Raven Rock."

"We aren't going to breach it," Vincent agreed smoothly. "We are going to be invited inside."

"How?" Cole asked, skeptical.

"Because Director Vance is arrogant," Vincent reasoned. "She knows you survived the plane crash. She knows you will eventually realize what the key does. She will expect you to try and destroy it. But if we make her believe that you have surrendered the key to a hostile foreign power... she will be forced to mobilize a massive recovery operation."

Vincent pulled up a digital map on the tactical table.

"We leak intel that I have captured you, and that the Moretti syndicate is selling the biological key to a Russian oligarch at a private auction in New York," Vincent explained. "Vance won't trust the FBI or the CIA with this. She will deploy her own loyal, black-ops units to secure the auction."

"Leaving Raven Rock operating on a skeleton crew," Cole deduced, the brilliant, reckless geometry of the plan snapping into focus.

"Exactly," Vincent nodded. "While my men keep Vance’s army occupied in Manhattan, you and your ghost team will infiltrate the mountain. You upload the key, destroy the network, and vanish before they even realize they've been played."

"You are risking your entire legitimate empire to create a diversion for a dead man," Cole pointed out, studying the mafia boss. "Why?"

"Because," Vincent whispered, his pale gray eyes turning to absolute, unforgiving ice, "my daughter sleeps in Chicago. And I refuse to let a bureaucrat with a god complex build a surveillance grid over her head."
