Chapter 18

The Vanguard server vault was a massive, circular chamber bathed in the eerie, pulsating blue glow of thousands of mainframes. The sheer processing power required to house the blackmail and surveillance data of the entire global intelligence community hummed aggressively in the freezing air.
"We're in," Cole whispered, his weapon raised as he scanned the room for threats. "Sarah, move to the primary console. Upload the microdot."
Sarah squeezed through the blast doors, her breath pluming in the cold air. She rushed to the sleek, glass-paneled central terminal, pulling the tiny black carbon microdot from her tactical vest. She inserted it into a specialized adapter and plugged it into the console.
The screen flashed red. UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS DETECTED. BIOMETRIC CONFIRMATION REQUIRED.
"Cole, it wants a biometric handshake," Sarah panicked, her fingers hovering over the keyboard. "It’s locked to Ethan’s genetic profile!"
"Ethan is dead," Cole growled, pacing the room, his eyes scanning the dark corners. "There has to be a bypass protocol."
Before Sarah could respond, a slow, methodical clapping echoed from the shadows of the upper catwalks.
Cole instantly raised his weapon, targeting the sound.
Stepping out of the darkness, illuminated by the blue light of the servers, was a man. He wore an immaculate, tailored Navy dress uniform, the stars on his collar gleaming. Admiral Sterling.
"A brilliant infiltration, Lieutenant Bennett," Sterling smiled, his voice projecting a cold, aristocratic arrogance. "But ultimately, futile. You cannot hack a system designed to protect the very foundation of the free world."
"You aren't protecting the world, Sterling," Cole stated coldly, keeping his sights locked on the Admiral's chest. "You are holding it hostage. You sold out your own men to build an empire of blackmail."
"I made necessary sacrifices," Sterling corrected smoothly, leaning against the metal railing. "The governments of the world are weak, bloated by bureaucracy and indecision. The Vanguard provides absolute, unified order. And we need exceptional soldiers to enforce that order. Soldiers like you, Cole."
"I don't work for terrorists," Cole spat.
"I am not a terrorist. I am a visionary," Sterling countered. "And you are out of time. My elite strike team is breaching the upper levels as we speak. They will execute the women in the van, and they will bury you in this vault."
"Sarah, the override!" Cole yelled, his finger tightening on the trigger.
"I can't bypass the biometric lock!" Sarah cried out, tears of frustration stinging her eyes. "It requires a localized DNA sequence linked to Ethan Vance's profile! The system won't accept the cipher without it!"
Sterling laughed, a dry, triumphant sound. "You brought a key to a door you can never open, Lieutenant. The Vanguard survives."
"No," a quiet, unexpected voice echoed through the vault.
Cole and Sterling both froze, turning toward the heavy blast doors.
Squeezing through the narrow gap, her small hands clutching her white stuffed rabbit, was Nora. She had slipped out of the van and followed them into the facility, her terrified but determined blue eyes scanning the room.
"Nora! What are you doing here?!" Cole gasped, absolute horror flooding his veins. He instantly lowered his weapon, rushing toward the little girl.
"Mommy told me to stay in the car," Nora whimpered, tears spilling down her cheeks. "But I was scared. I wanted you."
"Well, well," Sterling sneered, his eyes locking onto the child with a malicious, predatory gleam. "The missing piece of the puzzle. Ethan’s daughter."
"Don't look at her," Cole roared, stepping in front of Nora, shielding her completely with his massive frame.
"It's quite poetic, really," Sterling mused, drawing a suppressed pistol from his uniform jacket. "The child possesses the exact genetic marker required to authorize the terminal. The system will read her biometric signature as an authorized familial proxy."
Cole’s tactical mind raced. Sterling was right. Nora’s DNA could bypass the lock. But if she touched that terminal, she became an active participant in a war she didn't understand, and a permanent target for the remnants of the Vanguard.
"Sarah," Cole whispered, his voice vibrating with absolute, lethal resolve. "Prepare the upload."

He turned, scooping Nora into his arms. He didn't carry her to safety. He carried her directly to the central terminal, staring defiantly at the Admiral on the catwalk.
"You want the genetic marker, Sterling?" Cole smiled—a dark, terrifying expression of pure, unadulterated wrath. "You can have it."
