Chapter 90 - The Bloodline Override

The mist evaporated instantly under a sudden wash of thermal exhaust. Augustus stepped forward, the pneumatic actuators of his black titanium frame whining with unnatural power. He was an older, sharper, crueler mirror of Arthur Vance. Where my grandfather had carried the quiet, weathered stoicism of a master carpenter, this man radiated the cold, surgical malice of an apex predator unleashed from a half-century cage.

Richard let out a strangled sob, dragging himself backward across the grated deck. "The elder twin... Father swore you died in the bunker collapse of sixty-nine..."

"Arthur was always a sentimental fool," Augustus said, his voice flat, resonant, cutting through the wail of sirens. "He believed civilization could be steered from the shadows with moral restraint. He built Vance Ridge, this station, the entire syndicate infrastructure on my blueprints, then poisoned my air and buried me beneath three thousand feet of Atlantic bedrock."

He turned his gaze toward Eleanor. My mother, usually so commanding, so venomous in her control, looked completely paralyzed. Her designer jacket hung damp and ruined over her shivering frame.

"You," Augustus addressed her, tilting his head with chilling curiosity. "The daughter-in-law who pawned the dynasty’s secrets to foreign cartels to pay off bad margin calls. You brought Harrison Croft into our circle. Do you know who Croft’s father was, Eleanor?"

Eleanor swallowed hard, her hand trembling as she raised a gold-plated semi-automatic pistol. "Stay back! I don't care who you are! The board of directors answers to the sovereign ledger! I have the encryption key—"

A deafening crack shattered the air.

Eleanor gasped, her pistol flying from her hand as a high-caliber round took off two of her fingers. She dropped to her knees, screaming in agony and clutching her shattered hand.

At the upper catwalk, Harrison Croft stepped into the pale beam of an overhead floodlight. He held a customized SIG Sauer, smoke coiling lazily from the suppressed barrel. Dressed in his bespoke charcoal three-piece suit, untouched by soot or blood, he looked as pristine as if he were standing in a Manhattan courtroom. Behind him stood six mercenaries clad in unmarked black assault armor, their submachine guns aimed downward.

"My father was Arthur Vance's chief engineer," Croft said smoothly, descending the steel staircase with measured, rhythmic footsteps. "The one Arthur executed to keep the location of Sector Zero buried. For thirty-five years, I waited in Arthur's shadow, drafting his wills, filing his taxes, smiling as he praised my loyalty. All while I fed your mother just enough breadcrumbs to orchestrate this exact reunion."

Croft reached the lower deck, stopping beside Augustus Vance. He didn't bow, but bowed his head in professional deference. "The global terminal is ready, sir. Station Erebus is disconnected from the mainland power grid. Once the purge initiates, Vance Ridge burns, Washington goes blind, and the new sovereign order begins."

"No," I growled, bringing my rifle up to level it straight at Croft’s chest. "It ends here."
