Chapter 84 - The Obsidian Reactor Core

The circular room was the nerve center of Station Erebus. In the center of the sunken platform stood a containment housing forged from solid crystalline tungsten. Inside, a glowing sphere of dark, pulsing matter rotated within a frictionless magnetic cradle—the Obsidian Reactor.
"This is what Arthur spent the entire Vance industrial fortune constructing," Croft explained, walking toward the terminal. "The world believes the Vance estate is composed of real estate, mining consortiums, and legacy banking reserves. Pennies for children. This reactor powers an autonomous, subterranean global data-kill switch."
"A kill switch for what?" Victoria asked, her eyes darting across the diagnostic monitors encircling the room.
"For the Syndicate's entire offshore infrastructure," Croft replied. "Every bank account, every black-budget weapon program, every encrypted server farm holding the identities of corrupt world leaders. Arthur realized decades ago that the system could not be reformed from within the law. It had to be executed from beneath the bedrock."
"And the Obsidian Core I’m carrying?" I held up the titanium lockbox.
"The ignition key," Croft said. "Without it, the reactor is nothing more than an inert hunk of hyper-dense isotopes. With it, you hold the power to reset global finance to absolute zero."
Suddenly, a red warning strobe erupted across the ceiling.
A deep, subterranean thud vibrated through the floorboards, followed by the distant groan of bending armor plate.
"Alert," an automated synthetic voice chimed calmly through the ceiling speakers. "Perimeter breach detected at Sector 4 Sub-Hangar. External cutting torches engaged on Secondary Floodgates."
Croft’s expression didn't change, but his jaw muscles bunched. "She brought the *Ares* into the underwater canyon. Eleanor has deployed heavy salvage excavation platforms. She’s cutting through the mountain itself to get inside."
"How long do we have?" I racked the slide of the shotgun.
"Twenty minutes before they breach the inner perimeter," Croft said, typing rapidly on the glass console. "Julian, Arthur left a message for you. It was programmed to decrypt only if you arrived here alive with the key. You need to see it now."
The lights in the room dimmed.

Above the magnetic cradle, a three-dimensional projection coalesced from blue light. The figure of my grandfather, Arthur Vance, appeared before me—looking just as I remembered him on the porch of the old house: worn flannel shirt, steady, piercing gray eyes, and a weathered face that revealed nothing of the colossal war he had engineered.
*"Julian,"* the holographic projection spoke, its voice deep and unyielding. *"If you’re seeing this, then Richard has failed, Eleanor has dropped her mask, and you have finally realized that your entire life was a crucible."*
