Chapter 78 - The Siren’s Mutiny

"What is that?" Evelyn asked, leaning over my shoulder, her breath hot against my neck.

The sonar contact wasn't a standard submarine. It was massive—nearly three times the length of our vessel—sitting completely motionless on the ocean floor at the edge of the abyssal drop-off.

Victoria crept forward, her eyes widening as she stared at the acoustic profile on the screen. The color drained from her face, leaving her more terrified than I had ever seen her.

"No..." she breathed, backing away from the console until her spine hit the rear bulkhead. "That's impossible. They couldn't have deployed it this fast."

"Deployed what, Victoria?" I demanded, locking the sub's thrusters to hold our position in the dark current.

"The *Ares Leviathan*," she whispered, her voice trembling. "The Syndicate's deep-sea retrieval platform. Richard didn't come to the platform alone. He was the distraction. They knew Arthur’s protocol would lead to this trench. They’ve been waiting for us."

Suddenly, the passive sonar was overwhelmed by an active, high-intensity ping.

*SHRRRR-CLANG.*

The sound waves hit our hull with the force of a sledgehammer, making the titanium frame ring like a struck bell.

The console lights blinked out for two horrifying seconds before the emergency red floodlights flickered to life.

On the forward exterior camera, two massive halogen searchlights snapped on in the black water ahead of us.

Through the murky, pressurized deep, the monstrous form of an abyssal mothership emerged from the silt. Attached to its lower hull were eight high-speed hunter-killer mini-subs, their external mechanical arms already uncoupling from their magnetic berths.

"They're not trying to sink us," Victoria said, her voice dropping into a flat, dead whisper. "They're coming to breach the hull. They’re coming to take the core from your hands."

Then, the comm unit in our console clicked on.

It wasn't Richard Vance.

It was a woman’s voice—smooth, aristocratic, and completely devoid of human soul.

"Hello, Julian," my mother, Eleanor Vance, spoke through the speaker, her voice as clear as if she were standing right behind me. "Your father failed to secure the cargo. As usual, men are so easily distracted by family sentiment. Step away from the controls, darling. Open the outer airlock. Mother is coming aboard."

Beside me, the hull began to groan under the crushing pressure of five thousand feet of ocean water, as the first magnetic clamp of an incoming breach-pod slammed against our ceiling with a terrifying, hollow *THUD.*
