Chapter 88 - The Abyssal Ignition

A deafening hiss exploded from overhead vents as clouds of milky-white halon gas flooded the staging bay at extreme velocity. The fire-suppression protocol immediately starved the room of oxygen.
The mercenary operators reacted instantly, raising their weapons, but the rail-carbine in my hands was already humming.
*THWIP-CRACK!*
A hyper-velocity flechette tore through the lead operator's chest plate before he could level his rifle, the hypersonic projectile detonating the hydraulic actuator on his exoskeleton and throwing him ten feet backward into a bulkhead.
"Fire!" Eleanor screamed, diving behind a reinforced cargo container.
The room erupted into absolute pandemonium. Tracers lit the fog in streaks of lethal amber and red. The concussive thuds of heavy-caliber fire ripped through the halon mist, shredding steel crates and shattering overhead lighting panels into showers of sparks.
I dropped into a combat roll, coming up behind a concrete support pillar as rounds chewed through the masonry, showering my helmet with stone shards. I fired three consecutive bursts through the smoke—*crack, crack, crack*—taking out two more armored mercenaries whose optical sensors were blinded by the halon discharge.
Richard was screaming through his gag, thrashing against his restraints as bullets pinged off the steel stanchion inches from his ears.
I lunged forward, grabbed my father by his collar, and severed his cable ties with a combat blade in one clean sweep. "Move! Toward the corridor!"
Richard fell to the floor, gasping for breath, coughing violently as the oxygen-deprived air seized his lungs. "Julian... she... she didn't come for the keys..." he wheezed, his bloody hand grabbing my tactical vest with desperate strength.
"Shut up and run!" I yelled, pulling him toward the open blast door.
"No! Listen to me!" Richard choked out, tears of terror carving lines through the soot on his cheeks. "The Core isn't a key! It’s a tracking beacon! She wanted you to bring it down here to breach Vault Zero's inner sanctum!"
A cold dread seized my chest.
Behind me, the sound of tearing metal ceased. A heavy, hollow *CLANG* echoed through the entire facility—not from the doors Eleanor had been cutting, but from the very center of Vault Zero.
Over the comms, Victoria’s voice came through, shredded by sheer panic and static.
*"Julian! The reactor—Croft just entered an override code! Croft is not Arthur’s lawyer! He never was! He’s—"*
A gunshot echoed through Victoria’s open channel, followed by the sickening thud of a body hitting the linoleum.
Then, Harrison Croft’s calm, aristocratic voice spoke through my earpiece.
*"Thank you for opening the vault from the inside, Julian. Your grandfather was a brilliant engineer, but he never could tell the difference between a loyal hound... and an owner."*
Across the room, Eleanor Vance stepped out from behind the shipping container. She wasn't holding a detonator anymore. She was holding a tablet displaying the Obsidian Reactor’s status:
**OVERRIDE ACCEPTED. SECTOR ZERO OPENED.**
**GLOBAL PURGE PROTOCOL REDIRECTED TO SYNDICATE HIGH COMMAND.**
"Good boy, Julian," Eleanor whispered, her smile widening into a terrifying mask of triumph as the floor beneath us began to heave with a catastrophic, grinding tremor.

And deep beneath the bedrock of Station Erebus, in a vault that had remained sealed for half a century, an alarm began to sound—not in Arthur’s voice, but in a synthesized tone that carried the designation:
**CONTAINMENT UNIT 01 COMPROMISED. THE TRUE ARCHITECT HAS AWOKEN.**
