Chapter 111 - The Bloodline Firewall

The bunker fell deathly quiet, save for the hum of the cooling turbines. Victoria froze, her eyes widening as she glanced from the speaker grille directly to Arthur.

"What is she talking about?" I demanded, my voice dropping into a dangerous, gravelly register. "My father was Thomas Vance. He died six months ago in a clinic in Baltimore."

Arthur didn't look at me. His hands moved methodically across the terminal keys, locking down the air scrubbing systems to prevent chemical gas dispersal. "Thomas was a decoy, Julian. A broken shell of a man we pulled out of a debt prison to play the role of a feckless father. If Eleanor had known where your true biological father was, the entire Western theater would have burned fifteen years ago."

"Who was he?" I shouted, closing the distance between us until I could smell the faint scent of pipe tobacco lingering on his woolen lapel. "Stop speaking in riddles, Arthur! Look at the monitors! There are fifty men above our heads with enough explosives to turn this ridge into an open-pit mine! I deserve the truth!"

"You want the truth while the house is collapsing?" Arthur snapped, his silver eyes flashing with sudden, predatory intensity. "Your father was James Vance—my eldest son. The man who designed the cryptographic backbone of the global banking clearing system. The man Eleanor’s employers murdered in a black site in Zurich when you were six months old."

The air left my lungs as if I had taken a physical blow to the solar plexus. The scattered, blurry memories of my earliest childhood—a man with broad shoulders, hands smelling of solder and graphite, laughing in a sunlit room that never matched the squalid suburban houses I grew up in—suddenly clicked into terrifying focus.

"Eleanor stole you from Zurich," Arthur said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "She kept you as an insurance policy. A walking, breathing biometric key. Because James coded Vault Zero so that only his direct male descendant could ever purge the master ledger."

On the monitors, a new alarm flashed red across the screen.

*WARNING: CORE OVERRIDE INITIATED.*

*EXTERNAL BIOMETRIC DETECTED AT SUB-LEVEL ENTRY HATCH.*

"She's bypassing the electric grid," Victoria yelled, pointing at the thermal camera in corridor B.

The smoke was clearing. A second wave of contractors had dragged the charred bodies of the first breach team back through the hole. Now, rolling down the corridor on tracked pneumatic tires, came an armored breaching drone equipped with a reinforced ram and a digital biometric scanner.

Walking directly behind the drone, shielded by two massive operatives carrying full-body titanium riot mantlets, was Eleanor Vance.

She was wearing a Kevlar vest beneath her coat now, an assault carbine slung across her chest with the ease of someone who had carried one through war zones.

"Julian!" Eleanor called out, her voice now coming directly from the hallway intercom outside the inner blast door. "Don't listen to the corpse! Arthur didn't put you in hiding to protect you. He used you as bait! He knew I would bring the Vanguard here the moment he went into the ground. He’s going to trigger the purge protocol and entomb us all down here—including you!"

I looked at Arthur. He had already opened a glass hatch on the secondary pedestal, revealing two heavy obsidian keys resting inside mechanical slots.

"She’s half-right," Arthur murmured, looking straight into my eyes. "The purge is the only way to stop them from acquiring the ledger. But we don't die here, Julian. Not today."
