Chapter 76 - The Black Submersible

Victoria stared at the corpse for three seconds. Then, without a word of grief, she reached for the silver drive in my hand.

I snapped my wrist back, leveling my sidearm straight between her eyes.

"Don't," I said. My voice was no longer that of the confused grandson from the Appalachian mountains. It was cold, hollowed out by grief and betrayal, stripped of every illusion I had ever carried.

Victoria stopped, her hand hovering six inches from my chest. Her slate eyes narrowed. "Julian, Arthur was dying. He was delusional. The hypoxia was starving his brain."

"He was clear enough," Evelyn said from behind her, stepping into the lift with her submachine gun aimed at Victoria's spine. "Back away from him, Director."

Victoria slowly stood up, raising her hands to shoulder height, her expression shifting into one of dangerous calculation. "If you don't use that drive, Julian, Richard and his contractors will take the platform's control room. In twelve minutes, they will override the scuttle charges and open the oceanic gates for the Syndicate’s extraction fleet. We have to board the *Nautilus Zero* now, or we drown with Arthur's corpse."

A violent shudder racked the entire facility. From deep within the submerged pilings came the muffled groan of collapsing bulkheads.

*WARNING: STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY AT 42 PERCENT. MAIN SUB-DECK INUNDATION IMMINENT.*

Water began pouring from the lift shaft behind us, cascading down the cables like a subterranean waterfall.

"Move," I said, keeping the gun trained on Victoria while pocketing the silver hexagonal core Arthur had given me alongside the obsidian keycard. "Into the lift."

We descended rapidly into the abyss of the platform's lowest deck. When the lift doors opened, we stepped out onto an iron catwalk suspended over a deep-water moon pool.

Tethered inside the pool was an eighty-foot, matte-black deep-submergence stealth craft. Its sleek, hydrodynamic hull bore no markings, no national flags—only the familiar embossed phoenix emblem of the Vance lineage.

From the gantries above, rifle fire erupted.

Richard Vance stood on the upper staging platform, clutching his wounded side, flanked by four remaining Orion operatives. "Julian! Don't get in that boat! She will kill you the moment you clear the continental shelf! She’s the one who leaked the farmhouse coordinates to the Syndicate!"

I froze on the boarding ramp of the submarine.

I looked at Victoria.

Her jaw tightened, her eyes flashing with a sudden, lethal guilt. She didn't deny it.

"He was hoarding the protocol, Julian!" Victoria snarled, dropping all pretense of maternal care, her voice turning venomous over the roaring water. "Arthur sat in that rotting farmhouse for twenty years doing nothing while the world rotted! The Consensus needed to be activated! The Syndicate was the only hammer big enough to crack his shell!"

"You led them to my home," I whispered. "You got him killed."

"I brought you into the game!" she screamed.

Richard raised his arm to signal his men to fire, but Evelyn reacted first. She whipped around and fired a full magazine into the gantry support cables holding Richard’s platform.

The heavy steel cables snapped with the sound of cracking bullwhips. The upper catwalk collapsed in an avalanche of twisted metal, sending Richard and his men crashing into the dark, churning waters of the moon pool.

"Get inside! Now!" Evelyn yelled, shoving me toward the submarine’s open hatch.
