Chapter 48 - The Midnight Dead-Hand

The recoil rocked through my wrist. Arthur Jr.'s grip broke, and his body vanished into the churning, luminescent mists of the shaft below.
The rotunda fell into a terrifying, unnatural silence, broken only by the crackle of burning server racks and the steady hum of the failing cooling system.
Evelyn ran up beside me, her shoulder bleeding from a graze, her tactical rifle lowered. She stared down into the abyss, then grabbed my arm. "Julian, the purge protocol... what did your grandfather program it to do?"
The console screen had stopped flashing red. Now, a massive black-and-white countdown appeared, synchronized across every monitor in the subterranean complex.
`PURGE PROTOCOL OMEGA ACTIVE.`
`GLOBAL DE-ENCRYPTION BROADCAST: T-MINUS 120 SECONDS.`
`TARGET: ALL SOVEREIGN NETWORK NODES.`
"It's not detonating a bomb," I realized, staring at the lines of cascading code racing across the display. "He didn't build a dirty bomb under the house. The 'dirty core' was a lie to keep the Consortium from drilling."
"Then what is this?" Evelyn asked, her face pale under the fluorescent glare.
`"This is the clean slate,"` Grandpa Arthur's recorded voice resonated from the central speakers.
On the master satellite map displayed across the main curved wall, hundreds of red icons began lighting up across the globe—in Washington, London, Geneva, Moscow, and Tokyo. The secret, private backdoors into the global banking systems, the offshore shell accounts of the world’s intelligence directors, the automated blackmail archives—the entire invisible architecture of modern power was being unraveled, bit by bit.
`"Julian,"` Arthur's voice continued, gentle now, like he was sitting across from me at the kitchen table. `"If you turned the key left, it means you understood. You cannot reform a house built on rot. You have to pull the foundation down and let the sun burn the soil."`
The countdown reached:
`00:15`
`00:14`
`00:13`
"Evelyn," I said, turning to her. "The transmission can't be stopped. Once it finishes, every secret intelligence agency on the planet will be blind, bankrupt, and exposed."
"They will tear the world apart looking for whoever has the master terminal," Evelyn said, horror and awe warring in her eyes. "Julian, they will hunt you to the ends of the Earth."
`00:05`
`00:04`
`00:03`
`BROADCAST COMPLETE.`
`NETWORK SHUTDOWN.`
`ALL SOVEREIGN CLEARANCES ZEROED.`
A single, chilling chime echoed through the silent vault. The primary monitors went entirely black.
Then, from the far end of the cavern, deep within the shadows of the reinforced blast tunnel behind the reactor—a door that was supposed to have been welded shut forty years ago—came the slow, rhythmic sound of heavy boots walking across steel grating.
*Clang. Clang. Clang.*
Evelyn spun around, her rifle raised, her hands shaking. "That's impossible. Nobody has the bypass for the cold annex. That chamber was sealed with concrete in 1982."
From the darkness of the sealed tunnel, a voice called out—rough, gravelly, and unmistakably alive:
"You always were too quick to burn things down, Julian."
May you like
A silhouette emerged into the flickering emergency lights, leaning heavily on a carved oak cane.
It was Grandpa Arthur.
