Chapter 73 - The Traitor at the Helm

Before Arthur could answer, the lights in the command center flashed violently from pale cyan to an alarming, rhythmic amber.
A harsh, mechanical siren began to echo through the ventilation shafts.
*WARNING: PRESSURE LOSS IN LOWER TORPEDO BAY 4. BULKHEAD COMPROMISE DETECTED.*
Victoria’s posture stiffened instantly. She lunged for the master communications console, keying the primary security channel. "Security Control, report! What is that alarm?"
Static hissed through the speakers, followed by the muffled staccato of suppressed gunfire and wet, choking screams.
"... breached... deck seven..." a desperate voice managed before being cut off by the sharp *crack-crack-crack* of high-caliber rifle fire. Then, a voice came over the open channel—calm, cultured, and chillingly familiar.
"Victoria. Arthur. How touching to see the family gathered around the hearth one last time."
My blood turned to ice water.
I leaned over the console, gripping the edge until the metal dug into my palms. "Father?"
A soft, aristocratic chuckle leaked through the high-grade military speakers. "Julian. My resilient, stubborn boy. You really thought that pathetic extraction craft slipped through the net on its own? You thought your dear aunt Victoria was the only one who kept track of the old man’s offshore relics?"
Victoria pulled a black combat tablet from her tactical harness, her fingers flying across the override controls. Her face was pale, the veins in her neck bulging. "Richard... how did you board this facility? The acoustic hydrophone array would have picked up any surface or sub-surface approach within forty nautical miles!"
"The hydrophone array was installed by my logistics firm nine years ago, dear sister," Richard Vance answered, his voice smooth, devoid of any fatherly warmth, carrying only the psychopathic chill of an executive completing a hostile takeover. "Every sensor on this rig reports what I pay it to report. I didn't come by ship. I’ve been living in the dry-dock maintenance compartment three floors below you for forty-eight hours."
Arthur tried to stand, but his fractured ribs gave way, sending him crashing against the metal console with a ragged gasp of pain. "Richard! You fool... the Consensus protocols are autonomous! If you breach the reactor core, this platform will self-scuttle! You'll drown in three thousand feet of water!"
"I don't need the reactor, Father," Richard replied, the sound of approaching footsteps echoing through the comm line. "I only need Julian. The Syndicate has offered ten figures for his neural profile. They don't even need him conscious. A chemically induced coma will do nicely."
The blast doors at the far end of the command center shuddered violently.
*CLANG.*
The heavy steel groaned as a thermite cutting charge began burning through the four-inch titanium seal, spraying a shower of blinding white sparks across the diamond-plate floor.
"Julian, take this!" Victoria shouted, drawing a secondary sidearm—a customized SIG Sauer 9mm—and racking the slide before thrusting it into my hands. "The blast doors will hold for forty seconds! We need to get Arthur to the emergency evacuation sub!"
"There's nowhere to run, Victoria!" Richard’s voice purred over the ceiling speakers. "I brought thirty private contractors from the Orion Group. They’re cleared for wet-work. Hand over my son and the Architect's drive, and I might let you take a life raft."
I looked at the white-hot circle of molten steel spreading across the blast door. I looked at Arthur, whose breath was failing him again, his old eyes fixed on me with a terrifying mixture of guilt and defiance.
"Julian," Arthur whispered, grabbing my forearm with surprising strength. "Listen to me... don't let your father have the core. If he uploads the Genesis drive to the Syndicate's private cloud... it won't just be a surveillance state. It will be the end of human free will. Everything we bled for... everything I did to you... it will all be for nothing."
"You did this to me," I hissed at him, but I chambered a round into the weapon Victoria had handed me. "And I'm going to make sure none of you get what you want."
May you like
The blast doors blew inward with a deafening concussive roar.
