Chapter 67 - The Siege of the Inner Sanctum

Thomas chuckled—a dry, humorless sound that sent chills down my spine.
"The Seventh Key doesn't unlock a room, Julian," Thomas said, tapping the screen of the central spherical terminal with the silver head of his cane. "It unlocks the continental command fail-safe. Vault Zero. The autonomous defense architecture that sits underneath every major nuclear silo and military installation from Norfolk to Cheyenne Mountain."
"The Sovereign Consensus," Arthur breathed, his face going gray. "You bypassed the Pentagon entirely."
"The Pentagon is a bureaucratic corpse," Thomas spat, his voice finally losing its polished composure, revealing the manic fire beneath. "Politicians squabbling over budgets while our infrastructure decays and our enemies circle like wolves! The Sovereign system was built to take human failure out of the equation. When the crisis comes, the machine assumes command. But it needs an Archon—a designated commander with the genetic lineage to override military firewalls."
"Julian is not your commander," Arthur growled. "He's my grandson."
"He is the asset!" Thomas roared, his mask of civility cracking completely.
Suddenly, the red emergency lights throughout the vault flashed three times. A loud hydraulic alarm sounded from the elevator shaft behind us.
"Did you think I came alone, Father?" Thomas sneered, stepping backward toward the security console. "I gave you the counter-agent to keep Julian compliant. But my extraction team has already breached the perimeter gallery. Sector 7 is surrounded."
Through the shattered blast doors behind us, heavy steel flash-bangs came bouncing across the catwalk.
*BANG-BANG-BANG!*
The concussive blasts blew out our eardrums. Smoke poured into the command sanctum as half a dozen Praetorian operators rushed the threshold, their carbines chattering on full-automatic.
"Julian, take the terminal!" Arthur screamed, throwing his entire body weight into me, knocking me behind the heavy titanium plating of the central console just as a burst of armor-piercing rounds chewed into the display screens above our heads.
Evelyn, still recovering from the neurotoxin, rolled into the cover of an open floor grating, firing her sidearm with deadly, desperate accuracy, taking down the first breacher through the smoke.
Arthur was hit.
A high-velocity round punched through his right shoulder, spinning him around, sending his shotgun skittering across the floorboards. Blood splattered across the glass of the main terminal screen.
"Arthur!" I yelled, reaching for him.
"Don't look at me!" the old man snarled through gritted teeth, his face contorted in agony as he clamped a bloody hand over the wound. "The red lever under the master terminal! Julian, look at me! Pull the red lever!"
"What does it do?!"
"It's the scuttle protocol!" Arthur shouted over the deafening roar of the firefight. "It dumps liquid nitrogen into the reactor core beneath this room! It will freeze the mainframes and trigger a structural collapse! We bury the Cradle forever!"
"If I do that, the whole mountain drops!" I yelled, returning fire over the console, dropping another black-suited operator who was attempting to advance along the left catwalk.
"Better buried than ruled by monsters!" Arthur yelled. "Do it! Now!"

Across the room, Thomas was already sprinting toward a secondary private escape lift, his cane discarded, moving with frantic, desperate speed.
"Julian, don't!" Thomas screamed over the gunfire. "You destroy this terminal, you destroy your own legacy! You will die an orphan in the dark!"
