Chapter 117 - The Architect’s Sins

"James," Arthur whispered.

For the first time since this nightmare began, the legendary Architect looked old. The iron spine that had held back decades of conspiracies seemed to bend beneath the weight of the man standing before us.

"Don't look so mournful, Father," James Vance said, walking casually around the tactical desk. His movements were fluid, precise, and devoid of fear. "You look as though you've seen a ghost. But then again, you've spent thirty years burying your family in shallow graves to protect your precious moral ledger."

"You staged the plane crash in the Azores," Arthur said, his hand tightening around the butt of his .45 in his coat pocket. "You allowed Eleanor to believe you were shredded across five square miles of Atlantic seafloor."

"Of course I did," James smiled, stopping ten paces from us. His cold blue eyes flicked over Victoria, dismissing her instantly, before settling squarely on me. "If Eleanor knew I was alive, she would have spent the last fifteen years trying to poison my soup. And if you knew I was alive, Father, you would have triggered the dead-hand protocol before I could consolidate the third Directorate council."

"You're the Directorate," I said, the pieces falling into place with a horrifying, sickening clarity. "It wasn't just Eleanor. She was trying to breach the vault because she was hunting *you*."

"Give the boy a prize," James laughed softly, clapping his hands together once. "Eleanor thought she was running the show. She thought the Vanguard was her private army. But who do you think funded Vanguard’s expansion into sub-Saharan resource extraction? Who do you think signed the offshore letters of credit that bought her heavy breaching drones?"

He took another step toward me, his eyes softening into a horrifying caricature of paternal pride.

"I built the trap, Julian. I needed Arthur out of the freezer. I needed the purge protocol triggered. Arthur's ledger didn't broadcast to the public press. That was his childish idealist programming. I rerouted the satellite uplink sixty seconds before you turned that obsidian key."

"What did you do?" Victoria snarled, her finger tightening on the trigger.

"I redirected the data dump into a private, sovereign neural net," James said, spreading his arms wide. "The entire global intelligence architecture, the private banking records of forty nation-states, the operational identities of every intelligence operative from Langley to Beijing—it didn't get published. It got *auctioned*. And in thirty minutes, the highest bidder takes total operational control of the Western hemisphere."

"Over my dead body," Arthur growled, stepping past me with his weapon raised.

"That was always the plan, Father," James replied calmly.

From the dark tunnels flanking the terminal platform, the sharp, red dots of twelve laser designators suddenly painted Arthur’s chest, my neck, and Victoria’s forehead.
