Chapter 106 - The Ghost in the Bloodline

The sound of Arthur's voice in the sealed underground vault was paralyzing. Victoria stood frozen, her weapon half-lowered, her wide eyes darting between the spinning spools of magnetic tape and my face.

"Julian," Arthur’s recorded voice continued, each syllable deliberate, laced with the icy calm that had kept international cartels and defense ministers at bay for forty years. "You spent your life watching me pretend to be a retired surveyor who spent too much time in his woodshop. You watched your mother and father measure the silver while the dirt was still loose over my head. You thought their greed was an accident. It wasn't. It was an engineered catalyst."

A heavy sigh crackled through the tape, followed by the distinct sound of smoke being exhaled.

"Your parents were compromised thirty years ago, Julian. The Directorate owned your father’s gambling debts before you were even born. They placed your mother in his path to ensure that when the time came, the Vance family assets would be dismantled from the inside out without a single shot fired. I had to let them think they were winning. I had to let them think the old man was finally senile, fragile, and dead."

I stepped closer to the machine, my jaw clenched so tight my teeth ached. "He faked it," I whispered, the weight of the realization crashing down like an avalanche. "The cardiac arrest. The coroner's report. The sealed casket."

"The casket was weighted with four hundred pounds of lead shot and granite gravel," Arthur’s voice boomed through the speakers, answering the unspoken thought as if he were standing directly behind me. "I couldn't protect you while standing in the sunlight, grandson. As long as I was breathing in the open, the Syndicate’s orbital dead-hand protocols were aimed squarely at this valley. The only way to disarm a preemptive nuclear or financial strike was to convince them the king had fallen."

The tape paused for two agonizing seconds, the background hum of the recording shifting.

"Now you hold the Ledger. You hold the sovereign codes. But what you hold in your hands right now isn’t an inheritance, Julian. It’s an extradition warrant. In twenty minutes, the private mercenary arm of the Directorate—a black-budget division known as 'Aegis Vanguard'—will reach Vance Ridge. They aren't coming to scavenge. They are coming with thermite charges to melt this mountain down to a glass crater. They know I’m alive."

Victoria gasped, whirling toward the main console in the adjacent room. "Julian! Radar intercept!"

I bolted back into the command center. On the primary radar display, three fast-moving aerial signatures were screaming in from the east, flying low below the ridgeline to evade civilian air traffic control.

"Three attack helos," Victoria said, her face drained of color as she read the telemetry. "No transponders. Armed with AGM-114 air-to-ground missiles. ETA: four minutes."

Arthur’s voice echoed through the intercom from the reel-to-reel deck:

"Under the floor plate of console three, there is an ignition key marked *Titan*. Turn it, Julian. Show them why this family has held this ridge for two hundred years."
