Chapter 82 - Echoes of the Sovereign Vault

Our battered submarine surged into the cavernous internal dry dock of Station Erebus, displacing thousands of gallons of seawater into overflow culverts as the automated drainage system engaged with the roar of an awakening beast.

Massive overhead drainage valves hissed. The water level dropped violently around our hull until the bathyscaphe groaned and settled heavily onto the grooved steel floor of an immense subterranean basin.

For a full minute, neither of us breathed. The only sound was the steady *drip-drip-drip* of condensation falling onto the titanium roof and the dying whine of our overheated engine.

Victoria slowly lowered her weapon, her chest heaving as she brushed damp strands of hair from her sweat-sheened forehead. "We're inside. God help us... we're actually inside Arthur’s primary offshore redoubt."

"Check your seals," I said, unbuckling my five-point harness and retrieving the heavy tactical shotgun Arthur had cached behind the pilot seat. "We don't know what Arthur left running down here. And we don't know how long that outer door will keep Eleanor out."

I hit the manual release on our upper hatch. The latch spun with a sharp mechanical clack, and fresh, oxygenated, but chillingly sterile air rushed into the cockpit. It tasted of ozone, ancient motor oil, and dry limestone.

We climbed out onto the exterior casing of the sub.

The dry dock was cathedral-sized, illuminated by rows of low-humming industrial sodium-vapor lights that flickered to life automatically along the damp rock walls. Above us hung steel catwalks, automated crane rigs, and heavy fiber-optic cables the thickness of tree trunks, all running toward a solitary steel bulkhead at the far end of the platform.

Above the bulkhead, painted in faded white stencil, were the words:

**VAULT ZERO — ARCHITECTURAL ARCHIVE & CONTINUITY COMMAND**

**AUTHORIZED BLOODLINE ONLY**

"Look at the telemetry boards," Victoria pointed toward a bank of monitors near the catwalk stairs.

I walked over to the terminal. Green phosphor screens were tracking global satellite networks, stock exchanges, and deep-sea military transponders. But one screen in particular made my blood run cold.

It displayed a live internal schematic of Vance Ridge—the family estate three thousand miles away in the Appalachian mountains where this nightmare had begun the morning after Grandpa's funeral.

Every room was mapped. Every movement of local law enforcement, Syndicate mercenaries, and my father's hired thugs had been tracked and cataloged in real time.

"Grandpa wasn't hiding from them," I said, a chilling realization settling deep in my gut. "He was surveilling them. He brought them all together on purpose."

Then, across the silent dock, a hydraulic lock clicked.

The main blast door of Vault Zero slowly swung inward with a heavy, grinding groan, revealing a long, brilliantly lit corridor lined with polished black marble.

And from the shadows inside, the rhythmic, deliberate sound of dress shoes clicked against the stone floor.
