Chapter 8 - The Shadow in the House

Back at the Moretti mansion, the clock in the grand foyer struck ten o'clock.
The interior of the estate was quiet, the warm chandelier lights dimmed to a soft golden glow. Elena sat on the plush leather sofa in the master suite's living room, holding a warm cup of tea while little Lily slept peacefully in the adjacent bedroom.
Bodyguard 2 stood watch in the hallway outside her door, his tall, broad frame visible through the slight crack in the mahogany entrance.
Elena set her teacup down on the table, feeling an inexplicable sense of restlessness wash over her. She stood up, walking toward the large arched window that overlooked the rear courtyard.
Rain was beginning to fall again, streaking down the glass panes in long, glistening lines.
Suddenly, a strange, wet metallic sound echoed from the lower floor of the east wing—a faint clank like iron striking marble.
Elena froze. Her heart skipped a beat.
She walked slowly to the suite door, pulling it open slightly. "Bodyguard 2?"
The broad-shouldered bodyguard turned his head, his face vigilant. "Yes, Miss Elena? Is something wrong?"
"Did you hear that sound from the east wing?" Elena asked, her voice trembling slightly. "It sounded like a heavy latch opening."
Bodyguard 2’s eyebrows knitted together in immediate concern. He touched his earpiece, speaking into his radio mic. "Security detail, report in from the lower holding level. Over."
Static hummed through the earpiece. No response came through.
Bodyguard 2’s face went rigid. He immediately unholstered his black sidearm from beneath his jacket, stepping in front of Elena protectively. "Stay inside this room, Miss Elena. Lock the door behind me."
"Wait—" Elena gasped.
"Lock it!" Bodyguard 2 ordered sternly before turning and moving swiftly down the carpeted hallway toward the grand staircase, his weapon raised.
Elena quickly backed into the room, turning the heavy brass lock on the mahogany door with a sharp click. She stood with her back pressed against the wood, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs like a trapped bird.
Minutes passed in agonizing, suffocating silence.
Then, from the dark hallway outside her door, heavy, uneven dragging footsteps began to approach.
Thump... drag... thump... drag...
Elena’s blood ran cold. She backed away from the door, her eyes wide with mounting terror as she recognized the specific, heavy gait of the footsteps.
"Elena..." a raspy, blood-choking voice growled from the other side of the wood.
A heavy fist smashed violently against the mahogany paneling!
"Open the damn door, Elena!" Ronan screamed from the hallway, his voice thick with unhinged, psychotic rage. "I know you're in there with my kid!"
Elena gasped, horror paralyzing her limbs. Ronan had somehow broken free from the subterranean holding cell!
"You ruined my life!" Ronan roared, hammering his shoulder against the heavy wood, making the frame creak ominously. "You laid down with that mob boss while they beat me down there! I’m taking Lily, and I’m burning this whole damn house to the ground!"
Inside the bedroom, little Lily woke up with a sharp, terrified cry. "Mommy! Mommy!"
The sound of her daughter's fear snapped Elena out of her paralysis. She sprinted into the bedroom, grabbing Lily out of the bed and clutching the child tightly against her chest, retreating into the far corner of the room near the heavy stone fireplace.
CRACK!
The lock on the outer suite door gave way under a final, desperate heave. Ronan stumbled into the living room, drenched in blood and sweat, holding a heavy iron pipe in his right hand. His brown jacket was torn, his face bruised and filthy, his dark eyes burning with pure madness.

He stepped into the bedroom, his sneering face twisting into a terrifying grin as he raised the iron pipe above his head.
"End of the line, bitch," Ronan growled, taking a heavy step toward Elena and the crying child.
