Chapter 14 - The Crown of Thorns

The grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel was a swirling sea of satin, diamonds, and dangerous power. It was the annual Winter Solstice Gala—a neutral gathering where politicians, corrupt judges, and the city’s most ruthless crime syndicates gathered under the guise of high-society philanthropy.
The heavy brass doors swung open, and the orchestral music seemed to falter.
Vincent Donati entered the room, exuding a lethal, untouchable majesty in a bespoke midnight-black tuxedo. But the collective breath of Chicago’s elite caught not because of the Don—it was the woman on his arm.
Elena looked breathtaking. The timid maid in faded cotton had vanished. In her place stood a woman draped in an emerald-green silk gown that clung to her curves like liquid jade, its high neckline elegantly concealing the scars upon her collarbone while exposing the flawless, porcelain skin of her shoulders. Her chestnut hair was pinned up in an intricate crown of braids, diamond drops glittering at her ears.
Around her neck rested the Donati family heirloom: a stunning choker of black diamonds, the traditional mark of the Don’s betrothed.
Whispers cut through the ballroom like venomous daggers.
*"Is that her?"*
*"The runaway from the West Side?"*
*"Donati brought a common servant to the Solstice Gala..."*
Elena felt the suffocating weight of hundreds of judgmental eyes. Her heart hammered against her ribs, her palms turning slick with nervous sweat. But then Vincent’s hand slid down her arm, his fingers intertwining firmly with hers. He brought her hand to his lips, kissing her knuckles in full view of the entire underworld.
"Hold your head high, my love," Vincent murmured, loud enough for the surrounding tables to hear. "They look at you because they are looking at their future."
For the next hour, Vincent never left her side, parrying veiled insults from politicians with sharp, chilling smiles that silenced his detractors instantly. For the first time in her life, Elena felt not like prey, but like an empress.
"Excuse me, Don Donati," a young courier bowed nervously, presenting a silver tray. "Mayor Callahan requests a private word in the cigar lounge regarding the harbor zoning permits."
Vincent frowned, his jaw tightening. He looked at Elena with hesitation.
"Go," Elena smiled softly, placing a reassuring hand on his forearm. "I will stand right here by the fountain. Marco is three steps away."
Vincent lingered, his dark eyes searching hers before kissing her forehead. "Five minutes. Marco, eyes on her at all times."
As Vincent disappeared through the velvet curtains into the private lounge, Elena took a deep breath, watching the crystal water dance in the fountain. She felt proud. She had survived the pit, and now she was standing in the light.
"Quite an exquisite performance, Miss Vance."
A smooth, mocking voice whispered directly behind her ear.
Elena spun around. Standing before her was Lorenzo Moretti, holding a glass of amber scotch. His cold, serpentine eyes raked over her body with vile familiarity. Marco immediately took a step forward, his hand slipping toward his breast pocket, but Lorenzo raised an idle hand.
"Easy, Marco. Just congratulating the bride-to-be," Lorenzo purred, stepping closer to Elena until the scent of his cloying cologne filled her senses.
"Leave me alone, Lorenzo," Elena said, her voice steady and icy, refusing to show a shred of fear. "My husband will kill you where you stand."
"Husband?" Lorenzo chuckled, a cruel, mocking sound that made the hair on the back of her neck stand up. "Is that what he told you? That this is love? That he saved you out of the goodness of his cold, black heart?"
Elena’s eyes narrowed. "Vincent protected me when no one else would."
Lorenzo leaned in, his voice dropping to a vicious whisper that shattered the music around them.
"Did Vincent tell you who paid Marcus to hunt you for three years? Did he tell you who bought up your father’s old debt and made sure Marcus stayed on your trail until you were forced to apply as a maid at the Donati estate?"
Elena’s breath hitched in her throat. The world seemed to tilt on its axis. "You're lying."

"Ask him who signed the bearer bond that funded Marcus’s operations in 2021, little maid," Lorenzo sneered, tapping the edge of his glass against the black diamonds on her neck. "You didn't stumble into his house by accident. Vincent Donati didn't rescue you... he harvested you."
