Chapter 1 - The Bloodstain and the Scars

The air inside the grand foyer of the Moretti estate was bone-chillingly cold, carrying the quiet, suffocating weight that accompanied every hallway in the vast mansion. High above, a massive crystal chandelier hung suspended from the arched ceiling, its brilliant, sharp light reflecting off the pristine black-and-white marble tiles below in vivid, video-bright clarity. Every surface gleamed with meticulous perfection, save for one jagged dark patch near the base of the sweeping double staircase—a faint, stubborn bloodstain that had soaked into the porous grout hours earlier.
Elena Carter knelt on the freezing stone floor beside a scuffed metal bucket. Her fingers, raw and bright rosy red from the freezing water, clutched a stiff bristle brush with desperate intensity. She was twenty-four years old, beautiful yet thoroughly exhausted, her slim, fragile frame clad in a modest black maid dress with clean white trim and a stark white apron tied tightly around her waist. A few stray locks of chestnut-brown hair slipped from her loose, messy bun, framing her pale, fair cheeks as tears of sheer fatigue burned behind her swollen eyelids.
She scrubbed frantically, pushing the suds back and forth across the dark stain. The harsh rasp of bristles against marble echoed endlessly through the hollow foyer, a lonely sound that competed only with the rapid, terrified rhythm of her own breathing. She knew the rules of the house. She knew what happened when tasks were left incomplete.
Heavy, deliberate footsteps echoed from the upper hallway.
Elena’s heart slammed against her ribs. She froze mid-stroke, her hands hovering above the grey, soapy water in the bucket.
Descending the grand staircase with cold, unhurried grace was Vincent Moretti. At forty-two years old, Vincent commanded absolute terror across the city of Chicago. He was tall, broad-shouldered, and strikingly handsome, his dark hair slicked back smoothly with subtle streaks of faint silver at his temples. A light dusting of stubble defined his sharp, ruthless jawline, framing intense eyes that seemed to strip away a person's soul in a single glance. He wore a fitted black dress shirt with the sleeves rolled slightly up his forearms, black tailored trousers, and polished black leather shoes. Dark, intricate tattoos crawled across his left forearm and spilled upward past his open collar across his upper chest.
Flanking him were his two chief bodyguards. Bodyguard 1, thirty-five years old, tall, muscular, with short dark hair and a crisp black suit, walked a pace behind his master with hyper-vigilant eyes. Bodyguard 2, thirty-eight, broad-shouldered with a neatly trimmed beard, took up a watchful post near the bottom landing of the staircase, his hand resting casually inside his jacket.
Vincent stopped a few feet behind Elena. He did not speak immediately. He merely stood there, his tall frame casting a long, intimidating shadow over her trembling form as he stared down at the dark smear on the floor.
"It’s still not clean," Vincent said, his voice a low, controlled rumble that chilled the room far more than the draught from the windows.
Elena gasped softly, her whole body flinching at the sound. "I-I'm sorry, sir," she whispered, her voice trembling violently.
Desperate to fix her mistake, Elena tried to rise quickly to her feet to fetch fresh water. But in her panicked haste, her left sleeve caught sharply on the jagged metal handle of the bucket. The cheap fabric gave way with a loud, tearing sound, ripping upward past her elbow.
Elena lost her balance, stumbling sideways onto her knees.
As her sleeve tore open, the bright chandelier light illuminated the bare skin of her forearm. Etched deep into her fair, pale skin were severe, twisted white and pink scars—unmistakable crisscrossing marks left by years of brutal, systematic physical violence.
Vincent’s dark eyes instantly locked onto the exposed scars. His cold, controlled demeanor shattered into a sudden, rigid focus. He stepped closer, his heavy leather shoes coming to a halt inches from her hand, while behind him, both Bodyguard 1 and Bodyguard 2 caught sight of the horrific marks and stiffened in visible shock.
"Look at me," Vincent commanded. His voice was no longer just quiet; it was laced with a sharp, stunned anger that vibrated through the silent foyer.
Elena instinctively pulled her arm back, gasping as she tried to gather the torn black cloth to cover her skin. "Please, Mr. Moretti, it's nothing—I'm just clumsy—"
Before she could hide her arm, Vincent leaned down. His large, tattooed hand moved with surprising, unbelievable gentleness, catching her wrist in mid-air. His grip was soft, almost reverent, yet completely unyielding. Elena’s breath hitched as she looked up into his intense eyes, finding not cruelty, but a dark, terrifying storm brewing beneath his calm surface.
Vincent did not stop there. Slowly rising to his feet, he stepped smoothly behind her kneeling form. With meticulous care, his long fingers reached out and gently pulled aside the high collar at the back of her maid dress.
There, spanning the full width of her fair, rosy upper back, was a horrifying tapestry of long, jagged scar lines—ancient, deep welts that told a tragic story of unrelenting abuse.
Elena lowered her head, hot tears finally spilling over her pale cheeks, dripping onto the cold marble floor. She trembled so hard her teeth clicked together.
Vincent stared at the scars, his face turning dead calm—the kind of unnatural, terrifying stillness that preceded absolute devastation.
"Who did this to you?" Vincent asked, his voice terrifyingly soft, dropping into an icy register that made the two bodyguards exchange uneasy, shaken glances behind him.
Elena turned her face away, her chest heaving as she tried with shaking fingers to pull the torn dress back over her shoulders. She looked toward the heavy double doors of the mansion, pure terror swimming in her hazel eyes.
"Please…" Elena whispered, her voice barely audible above the quiet hum of the chandelier. "Please… don’t make him angry."
At that exact second, the massive wrought-iron and oak front doors swung open with a loud, echoey bang, allowing a gust of freezing Chicago night air to sweep into the foyer.
Striding into the mansion with unearned, arrogant confidence was Ronan Carter. Thirty-two years old, rough, and intimidating, Ronan wore a wrinkled brown jacket over dark pants. He was clean-shaven with short dark hair, his face flushed with the shameless, volatile aggression of a man who believed he owned everything in his path.
"Elena! Where the hell is my—" Ronan began shouting, his loud voice cutting through the quiet estate.
But his words died in his throat as he crossed the threshold.
Ronan slowed his pace, his arrogant posture faltered slightly as his eyes adjusted to the bright scene before him: Vincent Moretti standing beside Elena, his hand still resting protectively near her shoulder, while two massive, suited bodyguards stared at him with unadulterated, lethal disgust.
Elena’s entire body went rigid as stone.
Slowly, deliberately, Vincent rose to his full, imposing height. He turned away from Elena, stepping directly in front of her trembling frame, placing his broad shoulders between her and the newcomer.

Vincent met Ronan’s gaze with a stare so dark, so mercilessly lethal, that the temperature in the foyer seemed to drop below freezing. Behind Ronan, Bodyguard 1 and Bodyguard 2 moved in silent, synchronized harmony, stepping past the threshold to block the heavy front doors, shutting off the exit entirely.
Ronan looked at the two armed men blocking his path, then back at the feared Chicago mafia boss standing protectively over his wife, and for the first time in his life, realization dawned on him that something was terribly, fatally wrong.
