Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary

The private living quarters on the second floor of the Moretti mansion were starkly different from the icy grand foyer. Warm, amber light spilled from elegant wall sconces, casting soft glows across plush velvet sofas, polished mahogany furniture, and thick, cream-colored oriental rugs that muffled every sound. A massive stone fireplace hummed quietly at the end of the room, radiating a comforting heat that slowly seeped into Elena’s freezing bones.

Vincent guided Elena gently onto a large, dark leather sofa near the hearth. He did not pull away immediately; his hand lingered on her shoulder, feeling the deep, involuntary tremors that continued to wrack her small frame.

"Sit," Vincent murmured softly, stepping back to give her space.

Elena sat on the edge of the plush leather, her knees pressed tightly together, her fair hands clutching the torn fabric of her maid dress over her chest. She looked around the opulent room in complete bewilderment. For six months, she had worked as a low-level cleaner in the east wing of the estate, never allowed to step foot into the master suite. She had known Vincent Moretti only as a distant, terrifying shadow—a man in tailored suits who walked past her with an army of guards, never casting a glance in her direction.

Yet here he was, standing before her, unbuttoning his cuffs and rolling his dark sleeves further up his arms, revealing more of the heavy black ink etched into his muscle.

A quiet knock sounded at the double mahogany doors.

Bodyguard 1 stepped into the room carrying a soft, thick fleece blanket and a silver tray holding a steaming porcelain cup of tea. He walked with measured, respectful steps, setting the tray on the low marble coffee table in front of Elena before handing the blanket to his boss.

"The team is at the apartment now, Mr. Moretti," Bodyguard 1 reported in a low, disciplined voice. "They secured the child without incident. Ronan's brother tried to put up a fight, but he has been dealt with. The child is in the vehicle, on her way to the estate."

A massive wave of relief washed over Elena, so intense that she let out a choked sob, covering her face with her hands. "Thank God... oh God, thank you..."

Vincent took the fleece blanket and wrapped it carefully around Elena’s shoulders, tucking the warm fabric around her small frame. His fingers brushed against her fair neck, hot against her chilly skin.

"Leave us," Vincent commanded the bodyguard gently.

Bodyguard 1 bowed his head slightly. "Yes, sir. I’ll be right outside." He turned and exited, closing the heavy doors silently behind him.

Vincent pulled up a high-backed leather chair and sat directly opposite Elena. He rested his elbows on his knees, leaning forward so his handsome face was level with hers. The firelight flickered across his dark hair, highlighting the faint silver at his temples and the sharp, defined lines of his jaw.

"Drink the tea, Elena," Vincent said quietly. "It will warm you."

With trembling, pale hands, Elena lifted the porcelain cup to her lips, taking a small, hesitant sip of the sweet, warm chamomile liquid. The warmth spread down her throat, helping to soothe the violent shuddering of her chest.

She set the cup back on the saucer, her eyes fixed on the black-and-white pattern of the rug beneath her feet. "Why are you doing this, Mr. Moretti? I'm just a maid. I'm nobody."

Vincent watched her intently, his dark eyes analyzing every line of grief and exhaustion etched into her youthful face.

"Nobody who enters my house is subjected to cruelty under my roof," Vincent said, his voice dropping into a low, resonant rumble. "And no man who strikes a woman walks freely through my city."

Elena looked up, meeting his intense gaze. "Ronan is dangerous... he has friends in the lower West Side docks. Dangerous men. If he doesn't return, they will come looking for him—"

"Let them come," Vincent interrupted smoothly, a cold, lethal confidence radiating from his posture. "They will find the same fate that awaits your husband in my basement."

Elena shuddered, but deep within her chest, a strange, long-forgotten sensation began to take root—a faint spark of safety. For four terrible years, she had lived in constant, terrifying isolation, bruised and beaten behind locked apartment doors, believing that no one in the world cared whether she lived or died.

The sound of soft, hurried footsteps echoed outside the hallway, followed by a quiet knock.

The door swung open, and Bodyguard 2 entered, holding a tiny three-year-old girl wrapped in a oversized pink winter coat. The little girl had bright hazel eyes—identical to Elena’s—and messy chestnut curls spilling from a knitted cap.

"Mommy!" the child cried out, her small voice echoing in the quiet room.

"Lily!" Elena shrieked, dropping the fleece blanket as she threw herself off the sofa, dropping to her knees on the thick rug with her arms wide open.

The little girl scrambled out of the bodyguard's arms and sprinted across the floor, hurling her tiny body into her mother’s embrace. Elena squeezed her daughter tightly against her chest, burying her face in the child's soft curls, weeping tears of pure, overwhelming joy.

Vincent stood up slowly from his chair, watching the mother and child hold each other tightly near the hearth. His cold, guarded expression softened entirely, a profound, unreadable warmth filling his dark eyes as he looked at the fragile woman who had suffered so much in silence.
