Chapter 4 - The Secrets Beneath the Marble

The night stretched long over the Moretti estate, the dark Chicago sky painted in deep indigo tones while a light drizzle began to tap against the grand arched windows of the master suite.
Inside the private bedroom adjacent to the sitting room, little Lily had finally fallen into a deep, peaceful sleep, nestled beneath layers of heavy down blankets on a massive king-sized bed. Elena sat on the edge of the mattress, her fingers gently stroking her daughter's chestnut curls, listening to the steady, rhythmic sound of the child's breathing.
She had been given a clean, soft velvet robe to replace her torn maid dress. The luxurious fabric felt light and warm against her scarred skin, a strange contrast to the rough cotton uniforms she had worn for years.
The bedroom door creaked open quietly, and Vincent stepped inside. He had removed his black tie, unbuttoning the top two buttons of his dark dress shirt, revealing more of the dark tattoos rising along his chest. He carried a small leather medical kit in one hand and a bowl of warm water with clean cotton cloths in the other.
Elena quickly stood up, her natural instinct for obedience causing her to fold her hands nervously in front of her. "Mr. Moretti... I can leave if you need the room—"
"Stay," Vincent whispered softly, closing the door behind him with his foot. "The child needs her sleep. And you need your wounds dressed."
He set the medical kit and water bowl on a nearby mahogany vanity, then turned to face her. "Sit on the chair near the vanity, Elena."
Elena hesitated for a fraction of a second before walking over to the vanity chair. She sat down, her back facing him. The large oval mirror before her reflected Vincent’s tall, imposing frame standing directly behind her, his intense eyes locking onto hers through the glass.
Gently, with absolute precision, Vincent reached out and parted the lapels of her velvet robe, lowering the fabric slightly over her shoulders to reveal her upper back and arms.
In the bright vanity light, the full extent of her injuries was tragically clear. Beside the old, faded white scar lines were fresh, purple bruises—dark prints from Ronan's heavy hands from just two days ago.
Vincent’s jaw flexed tightly, a muscle jumping in his cheek as he stared at the dark marks. He dipped a soft cotton cloth into the warm water, wringing it out before applying it gently to a fresh scrape along her shoulder blade.
Elena gasped softly at the touch, her body tensing.
"Easy," Vincent murmured, his low voice brushing against her ear. "I won't hurt you."
"I know," Elena whispered softly, her eyes meeting his reflection in the mirror. "It's just... no one has ever been gentle with me before."
Vincent stopped his movement for a brief second. His dark eyes softened with an ancient, heavy sadness. "Then the world has been filled with fools."
He continued working in quiet silence, expertly cleaning her scrapes and applying a soothing medicated ointment over her bruised skin. His hands, large and capable of crushing a man's skull, moved over her delicate frame with breathtaking reverence.
"Who was the blood on the foyer floor from, Elena?" Vincent asked quietly after a long pause, his fingers applying a soft bandage to her forearm.
Elena lowered her eyes, staring at her hands folded in her lap. "It was... a man named Marcus. One of Ronan's associates. He came to our apartment three days ago, demanding money Ronan owed him from gambling."
Vincent’s eyes narrowed in the mirror. "And?"
"Ronan didn't have the money," Elena explained, her voice dropping to a frightened whisper. "They got into a fight in the hallway outside your estate's back gate. Marcus pulled a knife... Ronan hit him with a heavy iron pipe. Marcus bled heavily before Ronan dragged him away into an alley. Ronan ordered me to scrub the stone before your guards found it... he said if I didn't get rid of every drop, he'd cut Lily."
Vincent’s grip on the cloth tightened so hard his knuckles turned white.
"Marcus Vance," Vincent murmured softly, recognizing the name instantly. "A lieutenant for the Valenti syndicate."
Elena turned her head slightly, looking up at him in confusion. "The Valenti syndicate?"
"Our rivals on the North Side," Vincent revealed, his voice turning cold and sharp. "Ronan wasn't just a low-level gambler, Elena. He was selling information about my estate's delivery schedules to Marcus Vance in exchange for wiping his gambling debts."
Elena gasped, her hand rising to her mouth. "He... he was using my job here to spy on you?"
"Yes," Vincent said, setting the cloth down into the bowl. "Which means Ronan Carter is not just a abusive coward. He is a traitor to this city."

Vincent leaned down, his handsome face inches from hers, his intense eyes locking onto hers with an absolute, terrifying promise.
"Which means," Vincent added softly, "he will never leave my basement alive."
