Chapter 13 - Scars and Steel

The world outside the armored Maybach exploded into shattered concrete and deafening gunfire.

Elena threw her body entirely over Lily, tucking her daughter beneath her chest against the floor mats of the luxury car. The vehicle shuddered violently as high-caliber rounds slammed into the bulletproof glass, spider-webbing the thick panels into opaque white crystals. Lily let out a terrified wail, her tiny fingers digging into Elena’s blouse.

"Shh, baby, look at me," Elena gasped, tears blinding her eyes as she forced herself to meet her daughter’s terrified gaze. "Mama is here. Look at my eyes, Lily. Close your ears and look at Mama!"

Outside, Marco’s weapon barked in furious bursts. A body slammed against the rear door, leaving a streak of dark blood before sliding to the pavement. Elena heard the unmistakable sound of an assault rifle reloading—and then, the driver’s side door was ripped open from the outside.

Elena let out a scream, clutching a piece of jagged metal she had torn from her purse, ready to stab with every ounce of maternal fury in her soul.

"Elena! It's me!"

Vincent’s voice cut through the chaos. He threw himself into the vehicle, his tailored suit jacket torn, a smear of fresh blood across his sculpted cheekbone. His eyes were wide, wild with a primal panic she had never seen on the Chicago kingpin. He immediately reached down, gathering Elena and Lily against his broad chest with an arm of iron, shielding them with his own body.

"Are you hit? Did they touch you?" Vincent demanded, his large hands frantically checking her shoulders, her neck, her hair, his breath coming in ragged, ragged gasps.

"We’re okay! Vincent, we’re okay!" Elena wept, clinging to his lapels. "Lily is safe!"

Vincent pressed his forehead hard against hers, letting out a guttural sound of relief that shook his entire ribcage. "Marco! Drive! Drive us back to the manor! Now!"

The Maybach roared to life, tires screeching as Marco smashed through a blockade of black SUVs, speeding out into the blinding gray afternoon of Chicago’s streets.

Two hours later, the sprawling Lake Forest estate was placed under total martial lockdown. High-voltage fences hummed with lethal current, dozens of heavily armed guards patrolled the tree line with Dobermans, and snipers watched every angle from the slate roof.

In the private gymnasium beneath the manor, the air smelled of gun oil and sweat.

"Hold it tighter," Vincent’s voice murmured behind Elena, his chest flush against her back.

He wrapped his large, scarred hands around hers, adjusting her grip on the matte-black Glock 19. His breath was warm against her ear, sending shivers down her spine despite the cold dread in her stomach.

"I’m shaking, Vincent," Elena whispered, staring down the subterranean shooting range at the silhouette target fifty yards away. "I’ve spent my whole life running from violence. I don't know how to wield it."

Vincent moved closer, his thumbs gently brushing over the delicate scars on her wrists—the marks left by handcuffs years ago.

"They used fear to make you small, Elena," Vincent murmured, his voice thick with raw devotion. "Marcus made you believe you were powerless. But you survived him. You kept your daughter alive in hell. You have more steel in your heart than any soldier in my army."

He pulled her trigger finger into place, his body heat wrapping around her like an impenetrable fortress.

"Don't shoot out of anger," Vincent instructed softly. "Shoot to protect the life we are building. Breathe out... and pull."

Elena exhaled, shutting out the ghosts of her past, seeing only the monsters that threatened her child. She squeezed the trigger.

*BANG.*

The bullet struck dead center in the silhouette’s chest.

Elena lowered the weapon, her chest heaving, the sharp recoil vibrating up her arms. She turned in his arms, her hazel eyes meeting his dark, smoldering gaze. Without a word, Vincent reached up, his calloused fingers gently tracing the jagged, faded scar beneath her left ear—the mark Marcus had left on the night she fled.

He leaned down, pressing his lips against that scar with reverent, aching tenderness. Elena gasped, her hands tangling into the dark silk of his hair.

"Every scar on your skin is a testament that they failed to destroy you," Vincent breathed against her neck. "I will teach you to kill every shadow that hunts you, Elena. But tonight, let me carry the weight."

He lifted her effortlessly, setting her onto the edge of the wooden bench, his mouth finding hers in a kiss that was desperate, hungry, and overflowing with an intensity that made the room spin. In the sanctuary of his arms, Elena felt the terror of the morning dissolve into a fierce, intoxicating fire.

Yet, as she held him, her eyes caught sight of the security monitors mounted on the wall behind him.
