Chapter 6 - The Gathering Storm

Dawn broke over the Chicago skyline in hues of pale slate and stormy grey. The heavy rain had subsided into a thick, low-hanging fog that rolled off Lake Michigan, cloaking the city's tall skyscrapers and industrial docks in a mysterious shroud.
Inside the Moretti estate, the atmosphere was charged with quiet, military preparation.
Elena sat at a long marble table in the sunlit breakfast parlor on the ground floor. A spread of fresh fruit, warm pastries, and hot chocolate sat before little Lily, who was happily swinging her legs from a high chair, coloring in a picture book with bright crayons.
Elena wore a clean, dark blue wool dress that the estate's staff had brought for her—a modest, elegant garment that fit her slender frame perfectly. Her chestnut hair was pinned neatly back, exposing her fair, graceful neck.
Vincent stepped into the parlor, fully dressed in his tailored black suit jacket, his dark dress shirt buttoned to the top, though his open collar still showed the hint of dark ink beneath. He carried a leather briefcase in one hand, flanked by Bodyguard 1.
Elena stood up immediately from the table. "Good morning, Vincent."
Vincent paused, his dark eyes sweeping over her in her new dress. A look of quiet, intense admiration flashed across his handsome face before he masked it with his usual controlled composure.
"Good morning, Elena," Vincent replied smoothly, setting his briefcase on a side table. He walked over to the high chair, leaning down slightly to look at the little girl. "Are you enjoying your breakfast, little one?"
Lily looked up from her coloring book with wide, innocent hazel eyes. She offered Vincent a half-eaten strawberry with a sticky, sweet smile. "You want one, mister?"
Bodyguard 1’s jaw dropped slightly in shock at the child's brazen casualness toward the feared Chicago syndicate boss.
Vincent, however, didn't flinch. A rare, genuine smile broke across his stubbled face. He gently took the strawberry from the tiny hand and popped it into his mouth. "Delicious. Thank you, Lily."
He stood up to his full height, turning his focus to Elena. His expression grew serious once again.
"I am leaving for the docks now," Vincent said softly, stepping closer to her. "Bodyguard 2 and ten armed men will remain at the estate. The gates are locked down. No one enters or leaves until I return tonight."
Elena felt a sharp knot of anxiety tighten in her stomach. "Are you sure it's safe? What if the Valenti family knows you're coming?"
"They expect a routine cargo truck," Vincent murmured, his dark eyes locking onto hers with absolute confidence. "They do not expect a war."
He reached out, his long fingers softly brushing against the side of her cheek, a brief, intoxicating touch that sent a warm rush of blood to her fair, rosy skin.
"Stay inside with your daughter," Vincent instructed softly. "By midnight, your husband and his associates will no longer exist in this city. You will be free, Elena."
Elena swallowed hard, her heart pounding against her ribs as she looked up into his intense face. "Come back to us, Vincent. Please."
Vincent offered her a single, firm nod. "Always."
He turned on his heel and strode out of the breakfast parlor, his heavy footsteps echoing down the long marble corridor as Bodyguard 1 followed closely behind.

Elena stood by the tall window, watching through the glass as three black armored SUVs pulled out of the estate's long driveway, their red taillights disappearing into the thick Chicago fog.
She clutched her hands tightly over her chest, praying to a God she hadn't spoken to in years that the man who had saved her life would survive the night.
