Chapter 16 - Whispers in the Vault

The silence inside the speeding Maybach was louder than the gunfire at the Drake.
Vincent looked away, staring out the rain-streaked window at the neon blur of the city. His silence was an answer that carved deeper into Elena’s heart than any blade Marcus had ever held against her skin.
"Vincent..." Elena choked out, the word tasting like ash. "Say something."
"We are entering the estate perimeter," Vincent said, his voice stripped of all emotion, retreating behind that cold, terrifying wall of the Chicago Don. "We will talk inside. Not here."
When they pulled through the heavy iron gates of the Lake Forest manor, the tension was unbearable. Elena bolted out of the car the moment it stopped, running straight up the winding stairs to the third-floor nursery.
She burst through the door, her heart hammering wildly.
Lily was asleep in her small four-poster bed, hugging her plush rabbit, completely oblivious to the war that had raged across downtown Chicago. Elena dropped to her knees beside the mattress, burying her face into her daughter’s soft blankets, weeping silent, burning tears.
She had believed in a fairy tale. She had believed that a ruthless monster had fallen in love with a broken maid and chosen to save her out of pure, redemptive grace. But in the underworld, nothing was pure. Everything was a transaction.
Footsteps echoed softly on the rug. Elena didn't turn around.
"She has been safe every second, Elena," Vincent’s deep voice resonated behind her. "Mrs. Gable never left her side."
Elena stood up slowly, wiping the tears from her cheeks, turning to face him. Her green silk gown was torn at the hem, her diamond necklace cold against her skin.
"Who was my father, Vincent?" Elena demanded in a low, furious whisper so she wouldn't wake Lily. "Marcus used to beat me while screaming that my father owed blood. And tonight, Lorenzo said you orchestrated the hunt. What did my father do to you?"
Vincent’s hazel eyes darkened with an ancient, unbearable sorrow. "Your father was Thomas Vance. He was my father’s chief accountant twenty-five years ago."
Elena’s eyes widened. "Thomas Vance? Marcus's brother?"
"Yes," Vincent replied grimly. "When the federal indictments came down on my father in 2005, it wasn't the FBI who cracked our vault. It was Thomas. He stole twenty million dollars and the ledger containing the names of every family operative in Illinois. My father was executed in his cell because of that ledger."
Elena took a step back, her back hitting the nursery wall. "My father... killed yours."
"Your father fled with the money. But before he disappeared, he left you and your mother behind in the slums to rot, letting Marcus take out his twisted rage on both of you," Vincent explained, his voice tightening. "My father made me swear on his deathbed that I would eradicate the entire Vance bloodline down to the last living relative."
Elena’s breath hitched. Her hand flew to her throat. "You brought me here... to kill me?"
"No!" Vincent stepped forward, his expression cracking, raw desperation bleeding through his impenetrable composure. "Ten years ago, I swore vengeance. But three years ago, when my scouts found you, I saw what Marcus was doing to you. I saw a young woman being tortured for sins she knew nothing about, starving herself just to buy milk for her baby daughter."
Vincent reached out, his large hand trembling as he reached for her cheek, but Elena instinctively flinched away. His hand dropped, looking as if she had driven a stake through his chest.
"I didn't harvest you, Elena," Vincent whispered, his voice cracking with emotion. "I couldn't kill you. My father's oath demanded your death, but my conscience demanded your salvation. I bought your debt from Marcus through a proxy to keep him from murdering you. I left the job opening for the head maid at my estate, praying you would take it so I could put you under my roof, under my guard, where no one in the Syndicate could touch you."
Elena stared at him, torn between horror and the devastating realization of his burden. "You lied to me from the very first day. You looked at my scars... and you knew."
Before Vincent could answer, Marco’s voice crackled through the hallway intercom:
*"Boss, down in the vault. The shooter we captured alive at the Drake... he's talking. But you need to hear this yourself. It involves your brother."*

Vincent’s head snapped toward the door, his eyes turning wide with absolute shock.
