Chapter 24 - Scars Reopened

The medical suite on the third floor of the Donati manor smelled of antiseptic, ozone, and the quiet, rhythmic beeping of cardiac monitors that sounded like a ticking death clock.
Lily lay in the center of the bed, dwarfed by the white sheets and tangled in a web of IV lines. Her skin was the color of skimmed milk, her lips tinged with a faint, horrifying violet hue. Every breath she drew was accompanied by a faint, rattling wheeze that cut into Elena’s heart like a rusted blade.
Dr. Morales, wearing magnifying surgical goggles, stood hunched over a stainless-steel table across the room. Using delicate tweezers and chemical stabilizers, he was analyzing the charred, brittle fragments of the ledger Elena had saved from the flames.
"Dr. Morales... please," Elena whispered from the chair beside the bed. She had refused to let the nurses bandage her burned hands until she was sitting right next to Lily. Her palms were slathered in burn ointment and loosely wrapped in white gauze, resting gently near her daughter’s tiny, limp fingers. "Tell me you can read it."
Morales didn't look up from the microscope. His brow was furrowed with intense concentration, beads of sweat glistening beneath his surgical cap.
"Don Luciano’s chemist used a rare neuro-inhibitor based on a synthetic viper toxin," Morales muttered, adjusting the focus knob. "The middle sequence of the molecular chain was destroyed by the fire. But... whoever wrote this left the molecular weights in the margins. If I can calculate the missing carbon-ring bridge..." He paused, his breath hitching. "I can synthesize a rudimentary neutralizing compound. But it will take at least six hours. And it will be agony on the child’s nervous system when it hits her blood."
"Will she survive it?" Vincent’s voice cut through the room from the doorway.
Vincent had discarded his torn coat. He wore a clean black dress shirt, the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing the dark ink of the Donati crest wrapped around scars from knife wounds and bullet grazes. His eyes were shadowed with exhaustion, but his posture was that of a predator on high alert.
"She has an eighty percent chance with the synthetic compound," Morales said quietly. "Without it, she has zero."
"Then synthesize it," Vincent said coldly. "You have five hours. If you need equipment, supplies, or an entire laboratory flown in from New York, Dante will have it on the helipad within sixty minutes."
Morales nodded curtly, gathering the samples and heading into the adjoining sterile lab with two assistants, the heavy door sealing shut behind them.
Silence descended upon the bedroom, broken only by Lily’s shallow breathing and the persistent hum of the life-support machines.
Vincent walked over to the bed, standing behind Elena’s chair. He placed his large, steady hands on her trembling shoulders.
The moment his fingers made contact, Elena flinched violently.
Vincent immediately pulled his hands back, his expression shattering into profound, silent grief.
"I'm sorry," Elena choked out instantly, burying her face in her bandaged hands, her shoulders shaking with silent, suffocating tears. "I’m sorry, Vincent. It’s not you. I know it’s not you. But... when Marcus touched my hair... when I felt his gun against my head... I was five years ago again. I was trapped in that room. I couldn't breathe."
Vincent knelt down beside her chair, sinking onto one knee on the cold hardwood floor until his eyes were level with hers. He did not touch her, respecting the invisible wall of trauma that had violently resurrected around her.
"Look at me, Elena," he whispered, his voice cracking with a vulnerability that none of his soldiers, none of his enemies, had ever witnessed. "You do not ever apologize to me for the ghosts that haunt you."
Elena lifted her face. "He’s coming for us, Vincent. He survived the lake. He survived you. He won't stop until he tears Lily away from me, until he carves his name into whatever skin I have left."
"He will never lay a hand on you again," Vincent said, each syllable ringing like an iron bell. "Do you know why I didn't kill him when I had the chance in that crypt? Because I was looking at you. Because your life, your breath, is the only thing on this earth that matters to me. But now..." Vincent reached out slowly, giving her ample time to pull away, and gently tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear. "Now, I am going to end him. Not for the family. Not for Chicago. For you."
A light tap on the door broke the heavy air. Dante stepped in, his face grim, holding a black tablet.
"Boss," Dante whispered, keeping his voice low so as not to wake Lily. "You need to see this. We traced the encrypted comms from the drainage tunnel."
Vincent stood up, his face hardening back into the granite mask of the Donati Don. "What did you find?"
"Luciano didn't pull Marcus out of the lake alone," Dante said, his jaw tight. "Marcus had help from the inside. Someone within the Donati territory provided the divers, the safe house, and the medical equipment six months ago."

Elena’s heart skipped a beat. A traitor. Someone close to Vincent had resurrected the devil himself.
