Chapter 29 - Into the Lion's Den

The world outside the armored SUV’s tinted windows was a blur of rain, flashing blue police sirens, and streetlights smearing across the wet glass.

Vincent drove like a madman, tires shrieking around corners, running red lights across the deserted Chicago avenues. Beside him, Elena sat rigid, her fingernails digging through the white gauze into her palms until fresh blood seeped through the bandages. She didn't feel the pain. She felt only a terrifying, crushing void opening in her chest.

*Not Lily. Please, God, not Lily. Take me. Take my soul, take my life, burn me to ashes, but let my baby breathe.*

"Hold on," Vincent growled, throwing the SUV into a drift through the towering wrought-iron gates of the Donati estate.

The vehicle had barely stopped in front of the marble portico before Elena ripped the passenger door open, stumbling out into the pouring rain, sprinting up the grand stone steps. Vincent was half a pace behind her, his hand catching her elbow as she nearly slipped on the slick marble, propelling her forward through the heavy mahogany doors.

The entrance hall was dead silent.

Elena sprinted up the sweeping curved staircase, her soaked clothes dripping onto the priceless Persian rugs, her breath coming in ragged, painful gasps. She burst through the double doors of the third-floor medical wing.

The room was bathed in the harsh, sterile glow of surgical lights.

Three nurses were frantically checking IV bags. Dr. Morales was hunched over Lily’s tiny form, an oxygen mask pressed over the child’s blue-tinged face, his fingers pressed against the carotid artery in her pale neck.

The cardiac monitor emitted a flat, unbroken, agonizing tone:

*BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP.*

"Defibrillator at fifty joules!" Morales barked, sweat pouring down his nose into his mask. "Charge! Clear!"

*THUD.*

Lily’s small chest arched off the mattress as the electrical current surged through her heart.

The line remained flat.

*BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP.*

"Charge to seventy-five!" Morales yelled, his voice cracking with panic. "Clear!"

*THUD.*

"NO!" Elena screamed, tearing through the nurses, throwing herself onto the side of the bed. She grabbed Lily’s limp, freezing little hand, pressing it against her lips, bathing the child’s pale skin in hot, desperate tears. "Lily! Lily, look at Mommy! Mommy is here! Baby, wake up! Please, don't leave me! Don't leave Mommy alone in the dark!"

Vincent stepped into the room.

The mafia king of Chicago—the man whose name made governors tremble, who had conquered cartels and survived wars—stopped dead in his tracks. His face lost every ounce of color. He looked at the flatline on the monitor, then at Elena weeping over the lifeless body of the child who had called him her protector, who had laughed at his awkward attempts to braid her hair, who had looked at him without a single drop of fear.

Vincent walked over to the bed. He reached out with a trembling hand, placing his broad palm gently against Lily’s cold forehead.

"Wake up, little lioness," Vincent whispered, a single tear slipping from his eye, tracking down his scarred cheek. "Your father is here. I won't let them take you."

Morales raised the paddles for a third time, his hands shaking. "One hundred joules. Clear!"

*THUD.*

Silence hung in the room for one eternity. Two eternities.

Then, from the speaker of the cardiac monitor, a faint, erratic sound broke the flatline:

*Beep...*

Elena froze, holding her breath.

*Beep... beep... beep.*

The erratic rhythm began to stabilize, growing stronger, regular, persistent.

On the bed, Lily let out a tiny, shuddering gasp. The horrifying violet hue began to drain from her lips, replaced by a faint, miraculous blush of pink. Her eyelashes fluttered weakly, her tiny fingers twitching within Elena’s grasp.

"The synthetic compound," Morales breathed, collapsing against the counter, his knees nearly giving out. "The foreign stabilizer finally bonded. The toxin is being flushed out. Her heart... her heart restarted on its own."

Elena fell to her knees beside the bed, burying her face into the white sheets, sobbing with such violent, overwhelming gratitude that her entire body shook. "Thank you... thank you, God, thank you..."

Vincent exhaled a breath he felt like he had been holding for days. He knelt beside Elena, wrapping his powerful arms around her shaking frame, holding her tightly against his heart as the rhythmic *beep... beep... beep* filled the room like the sweetest symphony ever composed.

For the first time in five years, the shadow of Marcus Vance had been completely expunged. Elena was safe. Lily was alive.

The nightmare was over.

Or so they believed.
