Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Dark

The storm outside the Moretti mansion intensified as midnight passed, heavy rain sheets pounding relentlessly against the tall, arched stained-glass windows of the grand study on the ground floor.

Vincent stood behind his massive carved oak desk, a glass of dark amber whiskey resting untouched beside an array of encrypted satellite phones and legal documents. The room was illuminated only by the warm, flickering embers of a massive marble fireplace and a single green banker's lamp resting on the desk.

Standing before the desk were Bodyguard 1 and Bodyguard 2, their dark suits slightly damp from inspecting the estate's outer perimeter.

"What is his condition?" Vincent asked, his voice low and unyielding as he stared into the dark flames of the hearth.

"Ronan is locked in the subterranean holding cell under the east wing, boss," Bodyguard 1 reported grimly. "He screamed for an hour, threatening to call the police, then tried to offer us money to let him go. He’s terrified."

"Good," Vincent murmured smoothly. "Has he confessed to his dealings with the Valenti family?"

"He sang like a bird the second Bodyguard 2 pulled out his blade," Bodyguard 1 replied with a cold nod. "He admitted to meeting Marcus Vance behind the docks twice a week. He gave Vance the security patrol routes for your cargo shipments arriving at Pier 4 tomorrow night."

Vincent turned slowly, his tall frame illuminated by the green light of the desk lamp. His dark wavy hair caught the subtle reflections, his light stubble giving his handsome face a stern, lethal edge.

"Pier 4," Vincent repeated quietly. "Valenti thinks he can ambush my shipment using the information from a pathetic domestic abuser."

"Should we move the cargo to Pier 9, Mr. Moretti?" Bodyguard 2 asked, his bearded face tensing. "We can redirect the trucks before dawn."

"No," Vincent stated coldly, stepping around the desk. "If we move the shipment, Valenti will know we caught his rat. We let the ambush proceed exactly as planned at Pier 4. But instead of cargo, Valenti's men will find sixty of my enforcers waiting in the shadows."

Both bodyguards bowed their heads in deep respect. "Understood, boss."

"And what about the girl?" Bodyguard 1 asked hesitantly. "Elena Carter and the child? If Valenti finds out she's here..."

Vincent’s dark eyes flashed with an intense, dangerous fire. "Elena and her daughter are under my personal protection. Anyone who steps foot on this property with intent to harm them will be erased from existence. Assign four extra guards to the second-floor hallway. No one enters that suite without my explicit permission."

"Yes, Mr. Moretti," both men answered in unison, turning to execute their orders.

As the bodyguards exited the study, Vincent walked over to the tall glass doors leading out to the wet stone balcony. He looked out into the rain-drenched gardens, his mind consumed by thoughts of the pale, beautiful woman sleeping upstairs in his bed.

For twelve years, since taking control of the Moretti syndicate after his father's death, Vincent had lived a life of total, clinical isolation. He had built an impenetrable empire of wealth, power, and fear, surrounding himself with men who obeyed his every word without question. He had believed his heart was completely dead, turned to cold stone by years of violence and bloodshed.

Yet, when he had seen those horrific scars on Elena’s back... when he had felt her fragile wrist trembling in his hand... something ancient and terrifying had awoken inside his chest.

A knock sounded at the study door—soft, hesitant, almost timid.

Vincent turned around. Standing in the doorway, wrapped tightly in her velvet robe, her messy chestnut hair spilling over her shoulders, was Elena.

"Elena?" Vincent murmured, his voice softening instantly as he stepped away from the balcony doors. "Why are you awake? Is Lily alright?"

"Lily is fast asleep," Elena said softly, stepping into the warm light of the study. Her fair, rosy cheeks were flushed with sleep, her hazel eyes wide as she looked at the powerful man standing in the dark room. "I couldn't sleep... I heard voices downstairs, and I was afraid..."

Vincent walked toward her, stopping three feet away. "You have nothing to fear in this house, Elena. Ever."

Elena looked up at him, her gaze drifting from his intense eyes down to the black tattoos on his chest exposed by his unbuttoned shirt. "I heard what your guard said... about Pier 4. You're going into danger tomorrow night, aren't you?"

A faint, subtle smile touched Vincent’s lips. "Danger is my profession, Elena."

"Please," Elena whispered, taking an unexpected step closer to him, her small hand reaching out instinctively to touch his broad forearm. "Be careful, Vincent. Lily and I... we have no one else in this world."

Vincent froze at the sound of his first name on her lips. He looked down at her delicate hand resting on his tattooed skin, feeling an overwhelming surge of fierce, protective passion that nearly took his breath away.

Slowly, deliberately, Vincent covered her small hand with his large palm, squeezing her fingers gently.

"I will return to you, Elena," Vincent promised, his low voice thick with unspoken emotion. "That is a vow."
