Chapter 7 - A Mother's Desperation

Cornered, exposed, and stripped of her aristocratic facade, Valentina broke completely. The polished socialite vanished, replaced by the cornered, rabid instinct of a woman who knew she was facing an execution.
"So what if it's true?!" she screamed, her voice cracking into a hideous shriek that bounced violently off the vaulted ceilings. She grabbed a crystal champagne glass from the table and shattered it against the edge, brandishing the jagged, jagged stem toward the men surrounding her. "What are you going to do, Vincent?! Kill me?! In front of seventy witnesses?! In front of the high society of this city?!"
She grabbed Ethan by the collar of his suit, violently dragging her terrified, weeping son in front of her as a human shield.
"My father already has the indictments ready!" she spat, tears of psychotic rage streaming down her face. "If I don't check in with his office by three o'clock, the FBI raids every single warehouse from New Jersey to Boston! You touch me, and you spend the rest of your life in ADX Florence! Ethan and I are leaving! Right now!"
She began backing toward the secondary exit, dragging Ethan with her. The boy was stumbling, crying out in pain as her sharp fingernails dug into his shoulder, but she didn't care. To her, Ethan was no longer a son; he was her passport, her shield, her only bargaining chip.
None of the guards moved to stop her. They looked at Vincent, waiting for the word.
Vincent simply watched her with cold, clinical detachment. He reached into his suit jacket and pulled out a gold Montblanc pen.
"Do you know why I let you play your little game for six months, Valentina?" Vincent asked calmly.
Valentina stopped near the velvet-roped stanchions, her chest heaving, the broken glass shaking in her white-knuckled fist. "Because you're stupid! Because you thought a pretty smile meant loyalty!"
Vincent smiled, but it was the smile of the devil himself.
"Because a snake only exposes its head when it thinks the prey is asleep," Vincent said smoothly.
He clicked the pen and scribbled his signature across the bottom of a document inside the red manila folder. He handed the pen to Marco.
"Senator Vance had a press conference scheduled for two-thirty," Vincent said, checking his vintage Patek Philippe watch. "It is currently two-forty-five. Marco, turn on the screens."
Marco immediately pulled out a remote control and aimed it at the massive audiovisual wall at the back of the atrium, which was normally used to display family tributes and business presentations.
The screen flickered to life.
It was a live broadcast from CNN Breaking News. The chyron across the bottom flashed in urgent crimson: **SENATOR DONALD VANCE ARRESTED ON FEDERAL BRIBERY, MONEY LAUNDERING, AND TREASON CHARGES.**
On the screen, live footage showed Senator Vance—Valentina’s father—being dragged out of his Capitol Hill office in silver handcuffs, his face covered by an FBI windbreaker as a swarm of cameras flashed relentlessly around him.
Valentina froze. The broken glass slipped from her numb fingers, hitting the floor with a dull, harmless shatter.
"No..." she whispered, her eyes widening in horror as she watched her father’s political dynasty crumble into dust on live television. "No, no, no... Daddy..."
"Your father took forty million dollars from the Russian syndicate to launder through your family's charitable foundations," Vincent said, his voice ringing out with terrifying, absolute clarity. "I didn't steal that evidence, Valentina. I created it. I handed the Department of Justice your father on a silver platter two hours ago. In exchange, the Attorney General signed a complete, unconditional non-prosecution agreement for the entire Falcone organization."
Vincent took three slow, deliberate steps toward her.
