Chapter 40 - The Sovereign Throne

The grand ballroom froze in absolute silence.

Don Calogero stared at Vincent, then burst into a mocking, raspy laugh that was quickly joined by the seven capos along the table. Dozens of assault rifles were raised, their muzzles aimed squarely at Vincent’s chest.

"The American boy thinks he is in Brooklyn," Calogero laughed, waving a dismissive hand. "Kill him. Take the girl from the boat. We will extract the codes from the old man's hide."

Vincent did not move. He reached into his pocket and placed the silver falcon head from Domenico's cane onto the mahogany table.

Beside it, he laid a small, black electronic detonator.

"Do you know why my mother gave the master seed to me instead of Domenico?" Vincent asked softly. "Because she knew my father was too arrogant to realize that true power is not leverage. It is the willingness to burn the throne to ash."

Calogero’s laughter died. He looked down at the silver falcon.

Beneath the antique casing, a soft, pulsating green light was glowing through the ruby socket.

*“Vincent,”* Ruby’s voice sounded clearly over the ballroom’s integrated audio system, having bypassed the estate’s security network through the hijacked drone relay. *“The mainframe uplink is complete. All seven offshore accounts belonging to the Sicilian Council have been drained. Five point eight billion euros have just been dispersed to non-extradition trust funds across twenty-six sovereign territories.”*

Calogero scrambled to his feet, knocking his heavy chair backward onto the marble. "What did you say?!"

"You're broke, Calogero," Vincent said coldly. "And the men outside? The two hundred soldiers guarding this perimeter? Their payroll was wired from those accounts. I just sent an open broadcast to every mercenary on this mountain: twenty million euros to whichever team executes the Council of Shadows before midnight."

Outside, the first burst of automatic gunfire erupted across the courtyard.

Screams, breaking glass, and the roar of heavy machine guns shattered the Sicilian night. The mercenaries had turned. The ancient loyalty of the mafia had evaporated in the face of limitless, instantaneous capital.

Panic consumed the ballroom. The capos drew their sidearms, turning on each other and rushing toward the rear exits as the heavy wooden doors of the estate began to splinter under the impact of tactical breaching charges.

Domenico looked at Vincent, his eyes wide with an emotion that was half terror and half twisted pride. "You madman... you didn't just break the American mob. You just executed the entire global order."

"I told you, Father," Vincent said, pulling his sidearm as the chandeliers above them swung violently from the concussive blasts outside. "The dynasty ends tonight."

Suddenly, the grand stained-glass windows of the ballroom shattered inward.

A stun grenade detonated with a blinding flash and a deafening roar. Vincent threw himself behind a marble pillar, his vision momentarily washed in searing white.

Through the ringing in his ears, he heard the distinct, synchronized zip of specialized rappelling cables. But these were not Calogero’s men. And they weren't the rebellious mercenaries.

They wore unmarked, high-altitude black combat suits bearing the insignia of an inverted triangle—the calling card of the *Black Directorate*, the shadowy intelligence faction that had stayed buried since the fall of the Berlin Wall.

A suppressed rifle cracked twice.

Vincent leaned out, firing back blind, only to see Domenico Falcone hit the floor, a pool of dark blood rapidly expanding beneath his chest. But as the old man fell, his hand dragged the silver falcon head off the table.

Across the room, a tall figure in a ballistic mask stepped over the fallen patriarch, scooped up the brass cylinder, and pointed a laser directly between Vincent's eyes.

Over his earpiece, the channel suddenly exploded with static, followed by the terrifying, panicked scream of his daughter.

*“Dad! They’re on the freighter! Caterina is down—Dad, they're taking—”*

The audio severed into dead, hollow silence.

The masked operative in front of Vincent lowered his rifle just an inch, his voice synthesized through a tactical vocoder:

May you like

"The Sovereign Ledger was never meant for the Falcones, Don Vincent. Thank you for assembling the keys."

The operative raised a heavy flashbang, dropped it to the floor, and the world dissolved into pure, blinding fire.
