Chapter 32 - The White Abyss

The ice shelf groaned beneath the sheer kinetic fury of the detonation. As the port catwalk collapsed in a shower of twisted girders and burning foam, Vincent seized Ruby by the harness of her tactical parka, dragging her toward the stern cargo ramp that hung suspended over the vast expanse of the Arctic pack ice.
Behind them, Caterina provided lethal, rhythmic covering fire. Every pull of her trigger sent a hollow-point round through the thick smoke, dropping Domenico’s recovery mercenaries before they could stabilize their firing lanes.
"The ramp is jammed!" Caterina shouted, ejecting an empty magazine and slapping a fresh one home without breaking her stride. "Vincent, we’re forty feet up!"
"We don't climb down!" Vincent grabbed the heavy emergency descent tether anchored to the stern gantry. He wrapped the nylon webbing twice around his forearm, scooped Ruby securely against his chest, and locked his other arm around Caterina’s waist. "Hold your breath!"
They jumped.
The wind seized them like a physical blow. The tether screamed through the friction brake, leaving a trail of smoking rubber against the icebreaker’s frosted hull before locking up abruptly five feet above the shelf. Vincent released the clasp, and the three of them slammed hard into the deep permafrost, rolling across the crusted snow into the shadow of a colossal blue-ice pressure ridge.
Seconds later, above their heads, the helicopter's turbine screamed into maximum pitch. The black Sikorsky gunship lifted off the burning deck of the icebreaker, its blinding searchlight sweeping across the jagged white desert like the gaze of a vengeful god.
"He won't leave without the comb," Ruby breathed, curling into her father’s chest. Her fingers were numb, but she still clutched the silver swallow. The metal had turned scorching hot after the electrical discharge, burning an intricate bird-shaped brand into the flesh of her palm. "Dad... the comb spoke to me."
Vincent pulled the thermal hood tighter over her head, checking the surrounding horizon with night-vision optics. "What do you mean it spoke to you, sweetheart?"
"It has an acoustic drive," she murmured, shivering violently against the sub-zero air. "When the electricity hit it, I heard my grandmother's voice. An audio track... coordinates. She said Domenico killed her because she gave the master seed to you."
Vincent’s blood ran colder than the ice beneath his boots. For thirty years, he had believed his mother died in an unsanctioned car bombing orchestrated by the Lucchese family in Queens. That tragedy had been the catalyst that drove him into the underworld, the fire that forged him into the ruthless sovereign enforcer who conquered New York.
"He lied about everything," Caterina whispered, her green eyes blazing in the dark. "He manufactured your entire life, Vincent. The vendetta. The rise. The blood you spilled for the family name. It was all designed to lead you here."
Above them, the helicopter banked hard to the west, its spotlight cutting through the swirling blizzard. Through the amplified scope of his rifle, Vincent could see the silhouette of his father standing in the open doorway of the aircraft, gripping his cane, staring down at the endless white wasteland.
"We have two hours before hypothermia takes us," Vincent said, chambering a round into his winterized assault carbine. "There is an old Soviet listening post six miles inland, hidden in the fjord. If we reach the radio relay, we can call the extraction sub."

"And if Domenico reaches it first?" Caterina asked.
Vincent looked down at the branded swallow on his daughter’s hand. "Then the Falcone bloodline ends in blood, just as he always wanted."
