Chapter 25 - The Sicilian Pact

The tarmac at Keflavík Airport was buried under six inches of driving snow when the Falcone Gulfstream touched down. Outside the private hangar, three modified Sikorsky CH-53 heavy-lift transport helicopters sat with their rotors spinning, cutting through the blizzard with a deafening roar.

Standing in the freezing gale, draped in heavy black wool coats, were twenty men. They did not wear modern tactical camo or corporate mercenary badges. These were men with leathery, weathered faces, silver-streaked hair, and eyes that had watched blood soak the olive groves of Corleone and Palermo.

At their head stood Antonio "The Ghost" Falcone—Vincent's seventy-year-old uncle, the brother of the legendary patriarch Domenico, a man who had vanished into the Sicilian mountains thirty years ago and was whispered to be a phantom.

Vincent walked down the airstair, Ruby right at his side.

Antonio stepped forward, his eyes locking onto Vincent, then dropping down to Ruby. A faint, wolfish smile creased the old man's wrinkled face.

"She has Domenico’s walk," Antonio rasped in heavy Sicilian dialect, his breath puffing into white clouds. "Cold. Unyielding. A true daughter of the hawk."

"Uncle Antonio," Vincent greeted, clasping the old man’s forearm in the traditional warrior's grip. "I didn't think you would answer the call."

"When the son of Domenico calls, the earth in Sicily shakes," Antonio replied, gesturing to the twenty battle-hardened veterans behind him. "These men fought the Corleonesi in the eighties. They fought the State. They owe their lives, their families, and their honor to your father. When I told them that a Russian dog had laid hands on Caterina, they did not ask for money. They asked for ammunition."

Antonio turned his gaze to Ruby. He unclasped a heavy, silver medallion from his neck—an ancient, worn medallion depicting Saint Michael subduing the Dragon—and draped it over Ruby's shoulders.

"In our world, little sparrow, a woman is either the prize or the ruler," Antonio told her softly. "Your mother chose to be a ruler. What do you choose?"

Ruby met the old killer’s stare without blinking. "I choose to be the executioner."

Antonio barked a deep, booming laugh that cut through the Arctic wind. "By God, Vincent! You didn't raise an heir; you raised a queen of war!"

Vincent unrolled a large nautical blueprint on the hood of a military transport truck. The wind whipped violently at the edges, held down by heavy combat knives.

"The *Knyaz Vladimir* is protected by an automated radar grid and twenty-millimeter anti-aircraft cannons," Vincent briefed, his tactical mind operating with surgical precision. "We cannot approach by water; their sonar will pick up submersibles within ten miles. We cannot drop from high altitude; the storm will scatter us across the ice shelf."

"Then how do we get in?" Luca asked, his arm slung in a reinforced tactical brace.

Vincent looked up, his eyes reflecting the dark northern sky. "We drop directly into their blind spot during the eye of the storm. We HALO-jump from thirty thousand feet onto the ice floe two miles north, navigate the pressure ridges on foot, and board through the ballast intakes while they are refueling. Ruby stays in the extraction bird with Luca."

"No," Ruby said instantly.

Vincent turned to her, his jaw tightening. "Ruby, this is not a negotiation. You are nine years old. You survived the fortress. You survived the highway. But that ship is a floating slaughterhouse."

"I am the only one who knows the layout of the ventilation system," Ruby said, stepping into the circle of veteran killers. "Mom left the structural schematics hidden in the audio file. She modified them using our family code. If you go in without me, you will trigger the bulkhead quarantine, and Voronin will flood her cell with carbon monoxide before you breach Deck Three."

Vincent stared at his daughter, his heart twisting with an agony only a parent could understand. She was right. Caterina had designed the fail-safes using their private cypher. Without Ruby, the rescue would become an execution.

Vincent closed his eyes for a fraction of a second, offering a silent apology to whatever God still watched over their damned souls.

"Get her a sub-zero tactical suit," Vincent ordered. "If anyone lets a bullet fly near my daughter, I will kill you myself before the Russians do."
