Chapter 39 - The Falcon’s Last Flight

The gates of Villa d’Oro opened like the jaws of an ancient stone predator.
Perched high on the jagged cliffs overlooking the Gulf of Castellammare, the seventeenth-century estate was a fortress of limestone, wrought iron, and cypress trees. For two hundred years, it had been the throne of the Falcone bloodline before Domenico fled to New York in the 1970s.
A convoy of black armored SUVs climbed the winding mountain road, escorted by dozens of heavily armed Sicilian militiamen riding on open-topped trucks.
Inside the lead vehicle, Vincent sat in a pristine charcoal suit, his hands resting on his knees. Next to him, Domenico was dressed in his traditional three-piece tailoring, though his wrists were discreetly bound by Kevlar zip-ties beneath his coat.
Caterina and Ruby were positioned three miles offshore aboard the freighter, monitoring the Villa’s thermal signatures via a high-altitude surveillance drone Ruby had hijacked from a regional private security firm.
*“Vincent, you have thermal signatures everywhere,”* Caterina’s voice crackled through the microscopic earpiece nestled in Vincent’s ear canal. *“At least thirty hostiles in the courtyard, twenty more inside the grand ballroom. Don Calogero isn't taking any chances.”*
"Understood," Vincent murmured. "Keep Ruby safe. If things go dark, execute Protocol Omega."
*“Don't die in there,”* she whispered.
The SUV ground to a halt in the grand courtyard. The heavy iron doors were pulled open, and Vincent stepped out into the warm Mediterranean breeze, guiding his father forward at gunpoint, hidden beneath the drape of his overcoat.
The double doors of the villa swung open, revealing the cavernous ballroom with its vaulted fresco ceilings and crystal chandeliers. Seated at the head of a massive mahogany table was Don Calogero—an ancient, withered man with eyes like polished obsidian, surrounded by seven capos representing the oldest bloodlines of Sicily.
"Domenico," Calogero’s voice scraped across the marble floor like sandpaper. "After forty years of hiding among the Americans, the prodigal son crawls home in chains."
Domenico stepped forward, raising his chin with imperious arrogance despite the ties around his wrists. "I brought you what was promised, Calogero. The Sovereign Ledger. The total financial infrastructure of the West. But it comes with a condition."
May you like
Calogero leaned forward, resting his liver-spotted hands on the table. "You are in no position to make conditions, Domenico. You and your son are dead men standing."
"The condition," Vincent interrupted, his voice ringing through the cavernous hall like a gunshot, "is that none of you leave this room alive."
