Chapter 24 - The Ghost in the Machine

The safehouse in Chelsea was disguised as a high-end art conservation laboratory. Behind climate-controlled glass cases housing Renaissance oil paintings lay a subterranean cyber-intelligence war room powered by dedicated fiber-optic feeds tapping directly into the transatlantic undersea cables.
Luca sat on a steel stool, his jaw clamped shut while a combat medic stitched the shrapnel wound in his shoulder without anesthesia. Sweat poured down the soldier's face, but he didn't utter a sound.
On the main console, Ruby’s micro-transponder data was being decrypted by Christian Rossi, the Falcone family’s chief technologist. Green and amber telemetry lines cascaded across five panoramic monitors.
"I have her," Rossi said, his fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard. "Don Vincent, Donna Caterina's signal pinged off a low-orbit military satellite over the North Atlantic. But she isn't on Russian soil."
Vincent stepped up behind the technician, his knuckles bruised, dried blood crusting the cuff of his dress shirt. "Where is she, Christian?"
"She is on the *Knyaz Vladimir*," Rossi answered, bringing up a 3D structural wireframe of a massive, ice-strengthened exploration superyacht. "Registered out of Cyprus, officially owned by an offshore mineral exploration firm, but covertly operated as a floating black site for the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service and Voronin's cartel. It's currently stationed in international waters, sixty nautical miles off the coast of Greenland, surrounded by drift ice."
"Why international waters?" Ruby asked, stepping beside her father, her eyes tracing the ship’s patrol routes.
"Because in international waters, there are no laws, no coast guard inspections, and no extradition treaties," Vincent said, his voice grim. "Voronin knows if he kept her in Europe or Russia, I could call in treaties with old alliances. On the open sea, it’s a fortress."
"There's more," Rossi added, pulling up a decrypted audio intercept captured by Caterina's swallow comb. "Donna Caterina managed to tap into the ship's internal mainframe while they were moving her to the detention deck. Listen to this."
A corrupted audio recording filled the room. Amidst the hum of heavy marine diesel engines, Caterina's voice emerged—breathy, bruised, yet crackling with authority.
*"Vincent... if you hear this... do not bring Ruby to Murmansk. Voronin isn't working alone. The coup inside New York was financed by the Ministry in Moscow, but the architect... the architect is someone who was at my father's wedding. It's the Silver Syndicate. They have a sleeper protocol inside the United States government. They want Domenico's ledger. The ledger isn't money, Vincent. It’s—"*
A loud bang echoed through the recording, followed by the sound of boots and a harsh Russian command. The transmission abruptly terminated.
Vincent felt a chill run down his spine that had nothing to do with the winter air. *Domenico's ledger.*
His grandfather had carried a secret into his grave—a secret that had founded the Falcone empire seventy years ago. A list of politicians, judges, and intelligence chiefs who had been bought with Sicilian gold. If that ledger fell into Voronin's hands, the Russian syndicate wouldn't just conquer New York; they would control the political infrastructure of the Western Hemisphere.
"We aren't trading," Vincent said, turning to Luca. "Ready the private jet. We fly to Reykjavik within the hour."
"Boss," Luca grunted, wincing as the medic pulled a knot tight in his flesh. "A direct assault on an icebreaker in Arctic waters? That’s suicide. We don't have the naval support."
May you like
"We don't need naval support," Vincent replied, eyes gleaming with an ancient, murderous light. "We have the Old Blood."
